Vejle [ ˈʋɑi̯lə ] is the center of Vejle Municipality and the administrative seat of the Danish region of Southern Denmark ( Region Syddanmark ). It extends over an area of 144  km² and has 57,655 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020). The place is located in the city triangle Trekantområdet .

history

West of the city, Harald Blauzahn built the 700 m long and 5 m wide Ravninge Bro over a swamp. The oldest bridge in the country was built to ensure north-south traffic on the Heerweg. Vejle, like Kolding , Horsens , Randers , Mariager and Aalborg, is one of the older sea trading towns on the east coast of Jutland . For centuries, however, it was only of regional importance. On March 8, 1864, the battle near Vejle took place here. After Denmark lost the Duchy of Schleswig in 1864 , the importance of these cities grew, as important trading centers such as Aabenraa , Flensburg and Hadersleben were south of the new border.

The city grew continuously into a medium-sized town, but did not develop as rapidly as the cathedral city of Aarhus . The construction of the bridges over the Little Belt near Fredericia increased the importance of the city, especially since the most important north-south connections in Jutland run through Vejle. The construction of the motorway over the Vejlefjord then relieved the Vejle bottleneck considerably.

In 1970 Vejle became a large municipality and at the same time the seat of the newly created administrative municipality Vejle . Vejle has been the seat of the Syddanmark region since 2007 , but is right on its northern border. Since 2007, the new municipality consists of the former municipalities of Børkop , Give , Jelling , Vejle and Egtved (except for the parish of Vester Nebel) and the parish of Grejs from the Tørring-Uldum municipality . It covers 1066.32 km² and had 115,748 inhabitants on January 1st, 2020. This makes it the sixth largest municipality in Denmark after Esbjerg municipality .

Attractions

Bølgen , new landmark at the harbor (July 2011)

The landmark of historic Vejle is the windmill that can be seen from afar, while the undulating residential complex Bølgen next to the harbor is a new landmark. The core of the town church of Sanct Nicolai dates from the 13th century, but it has been rebuilt many times and appears today as a building from around 1900. In 1835 a bog body was found near Haraldskær , which was initially believed to be the Viking Queen Gunnhild . However, it was a woman who lived around the year 490 BC. Was executed. Her bog body can be seen in St. Nicolai Church in Vejle. The old town of Vejle is one of the worst preserved in Jutland thanks to modernization in the spirit of the 20th century and adaptation to road traffic . On the other hand, the location of the city at the end of the fjord between mostly wooded and sometimes unusually steep hills for Denmark is extremely beautiful.
