Trekantområdet
Trekantområdet ( German "triangle area" ) generally refers to the area around the Danish city triangle between Kolding , Vejle and Fredericia in the Syddanmark region . The term, which originated in the early 1960s, also stands for the cross-border cooperation between the seven Danish municipalities of Billund , Fredericia , Haderslev , Kolding , Middelfart , Vejen and Vejle .
The area of these seven municipalities covers an area of around 4,151 km², on which 417,372 people (as of January 1, 2020) live. The largest cities are Kolding (61,121 inhabitants), Vejle (57,655) and Fredericia (40,981). The region is one of the wealthiest in Denmark; economically it is on a par with Aarhus and is only overtaken by Copenhagen . Due to its central location, it forms a main traffic junction, in which Denmark's second highest traffic volume after Hovedstadsområdet means a challenge for the expansion of the road and rail network.
The cooperation within the Trekantområdet began in 1992 when six neighboring communities agreed on closer cooperation; among them were the five former municipalities of Kolding , Lunderskov , Middelfart , Vamdrup and Vejen as well as Fredericia as the only one of these municipalities that remained within its borders after the municipal reform of 2007. In 1993 the alliance was expanded to include the two municipalities at the time, Børkop and Vejle .
Today's seven municipalities coordinate their cooperation through the Trekantområdet Danmark association based in Kolding, whose management is made up of the municipalities' mayors. It carries out projects in the economic, educational and cultural sectors that aim to improve the general conditions for companies and the population in the region.
