Vejlefjordbroen

Vejlefjordbroen ( Danish for "the Vejlefjord Bridge") is a concrete girder bridge in the east of the Danish town of Vejle , which crosses the fjord of the same name . The “ South Jutian Motorway” (Sønderjyske Motorvej) runs on the four-lane motorway bridge as part of the E45 and runs from Skærup in Vejle Municipality to the German-Danish border near Pattburg . With a width of 27.6 meters, the lane can be expanded to six lanes. From the bridge there is a view of the Vejlefjord, Vejle city center and the undulating residential complex Bølgen .

The bridge is 1710.15 meters long and is supported by two abutments and 16 reinforced concrete piers. The spans of the 17 openings are 67.90 meters, 14 × 110.00 meters, 68.75 meters and 33.5 meters. The prestressed concrete superstructure consists of a single-cell, 12.00 meter wide hollow box, which has a construction height of 3.00 meters in the field and 6.00 meters on the pillar. The design for the completed bridge structure was drawn up by the Danish engineering company Cowiconsult.

Because of its north-south orientation and its location in the tunnel valley , the structure is exposed to strong cross winds from the west, which is why it often has to be closed during storms.

history

After the traffic through the center of Vejle increased steadily from the 1960s, politicians and citizens demanded a solution to the traffic problems. Especially in summer long queues formed across the city on the former main road A10 (Hovedvej A10) . The basis for the construction of the bridge was a decision of the Folketing , which provided for a motorway from Kolding to Vejle. An international tender followed in November 1974 , which at the time was the largest in the history of the Danish road authority Vejdirektoratet . Vejlefjordkonsortiet was awarded the contract in July 1975 . The consortium consisted of the Danish construction companies Monberg & Thorsen A / S and A. Jespersen & søn A / S as well as the German company Dyckerhoff & Widmann AG . The architects Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen, who already worked on the New Little Belt Bridge , were behind the design of the bridge .

After five years of construction, Vejlefjordbroen was opened to traffic on June 20, 1980 by the Vejdirektorat. About a week later, on June 28th, the “Bridge March of the Red Cross” (Røde Kors' bromarch) was held, during which around 160,000 people walked across the bridge. The Danish Queen Margaret II officially inaugurated the building on July 1, 1980.
