from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Vejdirektoratet is the national Danish road authority, which is subordinate to the Ministry of Transport (Danish Transportministeriet ). The authority is responsible for the overall planning, operation and maintenance of the state road network, which includes motorways , primary routes and road bridges .

In addition to its headquarters in Niels Juels Gade in the center of Copenhagen , it has five locations ( Vejcentre ):

Vejdirektoratet has a total of around 900 employees.

The authority, which was founded on April 1, 1949, was created by amalgamating the Road Inspectorate and Road Office, both authorities of the Ministry of Public Works (Ministeriet for offentlige Arbejder) . When a new Road Act ( Vejloven ) came into force on April 1, 1972 , Vejdirektoratet took over administrative, economic and technical responsibility for the main road network, while subordinate roads were placed in the care of the respective districts and municipalities .

In 2014, the length of the state road network was 3,797 km, which is only five percent of the public road network, but handles around 45 percent of the traffic volume.

In cooperation with the municipalities and the state holding company Sund & Bælt , the internet portal vejportal.dk has been set up, which gives access to the websites trafikken.dk and vejseorien.dk , where general information about the Danish road network, traffic volume and - accidents are provided. This portal was shut down in 2012.
