Borås [ buˈro: s ] is a town in the southern Swedish province of Västra Götalands län and the historic province of Västergötland . It is the capital of the municipality of the same name .

history

The origin of the town of Borås can be traced back to the trading activities of farmers in the area in the 16th century. The farmers wandered through Sweden and sold their goods where the city is today. At the time, Sweden was only allowed to trade within cities. In order not to violate these regulations any further, a delegation was sent to King Gustav II Adolf in 1620 in order to obtain city rights from him. In 1621 Borås was named a town. The previously operated traveling trade was allowed in Borås as the only city in Sweden. This made it a trading city.

Borås has been completely destroyed by several fires in the past. The city burned down for the last time in 1827. In 1881 Borås had 4879 inhabitants.

In the 19th century, Borås continued to grow with the textile industry that settled here. In the 1960s, the textile industry made up two thirds of the local economy. The crisis in the European textile industry hit Borås particularly hard.

economy

The number of textile companies has decreased, but Borås is still a trading town. Many Swedish clothing companies are headquartered in Borås and almost all of them have sales offices here. Most of the Swedish mail order companies are also based in Borås.

At the beginning of 2018, the Swedish government decided to massively strengthen the textile location Borås and support it with 4 million euros over a period of five years. In this way, the innovative strength of the local textile companies and the development of sustainability concepts are to be strengthened and the exchange between those involved is to be supported at all levels.
