Johan Wiland (born January 24, 1981 in Borås ) is a Swedish football player . The goalkeeper , who made his debut for the Swedish national team in 2007 , won the Swedish and Danish championships. With the country selection, he took part in two European Championship finals as a substitute goalkeeper.
Career
Successes with IF Elfsborg and national team debut
Wiland initially played at Brämhults IK when he was young . At the age of 16 he moved to IF Elfsborg as a youth player at the beginning of 1998 . There the goalkeeper made his debut in the 2001 season in the Allsvenskan and was a regular straight away. At the end of his first season in the Swedish elite series, he also celebrated his first title win of his career, as he was also in the starting eleven in the final of the national cup against AIK alongside Andreas Klarström , Anders Svensson and Fredrik Berglund and after the 10: 9 success after a penalty shootout , in which he saved two penalties, was able to celebrate the cup victory. In 2003 he succeeded with the team the repetition of the triumph when the team again brought the trophy to Borås after a 2-0 win over Assyriska FF with two goals from Lars Nilsson .
As a regular player, Wiland was one of the guarantors who helped IF Elfsborg to stay in the league in the following years, alongside players like Lasse Nilsson, Hans Berggren , Kristoffer Arvhage and Samuel Holmén . Under coach Anders Grönhagen and his successor Magnus Haglund , he played every first division game in the 2003 and 2004 seasons before injuring himself in the summer of 2005.
After his return to the sports field, Wiland was again a regular player in the 2006 season and remained in twelve of the 26 season games without conceding a goal. He helped the club to win the Lennart Johansson Cup for the Swedish championship alongside Jari Ilola , Daniel Mobaeck and Stefan Ishizaki . As a result, he was appointed to the national team by national coach Lars Lagerbäck and made his debut on January 18, 2007 in the 1: 2 defeat against Ecuador during a South American tour in the national jersey. In the following years he was an irregular member of the Swedish squad and fought with Rami Shaaban for the place as second goalkeeper behind Andreas Isaksson in the national selection. As a second substitute, he was nominated by Lars Lagerbäck for the 2008 European Championship .
Change to Denmark
After the European Championship, Wiland announced his move to the Danish Super League for FC Copenhagen . Until the end of the season he played with IF Elfsborg for the championship title, but had to be content with the runner-up title behind Kalmar FF before he started his five-year contract in Denmark.
At FC Copenhagen he ousted the Australian Nathan Coe as the first substitute for the goalkeeper Jesper Christiansen . Until the end of the season in the summer of 2009 he stayed without a league appearance, but was able to look forward to the double from the Danish championship and cup win. He was also a substitute at the beginning of the following season, before moving up between the posts at the end of August after an injury by Christiansen. He took advantage of the opportunity and stayed in goal even after his opponent had recovered. At the end of the season he won the championship title as a regular player, while Christiansen changed clubs in the summer of 2010. As a result, he stayed in the extended squad of the national team, for long periods he was a substitute for Isaksson on the bench in competitive games of the national team.
In the 2010/11 UEFA Champions League , Wiland reached the group stage alongside Jesper Grønkjær , Oscar Wendt , William Kvist and Zdeněk Pospěch after the Champions' way against Rosenborg Trondheim due to the away goals rule . There the team of coach Ståle Solbakken was seen as an outsider, but reached the round of 16. Behind FC Barcelona , against whom they drew 1-1 at home , the team finished second in the group. However, against Chelsea , Wiland and his colleagues were eliminated from the competition, having played all eight games over the entire playing time. The club was also successful in the parallel national championship. The team defended the championship title with a 26 point lead over runner-up Odense BK .
After Solbakken said goodbye to the Bundesliga , Wiland's compatriot Roland Nilsson took over as coach. Although the team was placed at the top of the table under his leadership, the club replaced him with Carsten Jensen during the winter break . While he acted as a regular under both coaches, he had established himself in the national team as a substitute goalkeeper for "number 1" Isaksson. He was used in two qualifying games for the 2012 European Championship . After a successful qualification, national coach Erik Hamrén nominated him in mid-May alongside goalkeepers Isaksson and Pär Hansson for the European Championship finals.
