Career start and title in Sweden
Holmén initially played at Annelunds IF in his youth . In 1998 he moved to the youth department at IF Elfsborg . In 2002 he moved up to the professional squad, but was initially only used in the cup competition . The following year he made his debut under coach Anders Grönhagen for the team in the Allsvenskan and quickly established himself as a regular in midfield of the club from Borås . Although IF Elfsborg only managed tenth place in the league in 2003 , Holmén moved into the final with the club in the cup. There he was in the starting line-up on November 1 at Råsundastadion . With two goals from Lars Nilsson against Assyriska FF to a 2-0 win, the midfielder won his first national title alongside Hans Berggren , Andreas Klarström and Jonas Lundén . Even after Magnus Haglund took over as coach from the following season, Holmén was one of the club's regulars. In the 2006 season , Holmén became a regular goal scorer at his club. Together with Anders Svensson , the midfielder led the internal goalscorers list with seven goals this season, thus making a decisive contribution to IF Elfsborg winning the Swedish championship for the first time since 1961.
Change abroad
Shortly before the end of the transfer window in the summer of 2007, Holmén left after another half series with IF Elfsborg Sweden and moved to Brøndby IF in the Superliga . He signed a four-year contract with the multiple Danish champions, who had slipped into midfield of the league. With the reigning title holder of the Royal League , for whom Holmén was able to book 23 league appearances and three goals this season in his first season, he only reached eighth place in the table. However, the midfielder moved into the cup final with Brøndby IF, in which the team met Esbjerg fB . After Holmén took his colors into the lead early on, goals from Max von Schlebrügge and Martin Retov won the competition with two goals from Søren Rieks with a 3-2 win and thus made it into the 2008/09 UEFA Cup . While he was on the pitch in all 33 games of the season at his club and with five goals this season at the side of Stefán Gíslason , Alexander Farnerud and Jan Kristiansen as third in the table behind champions FC Copenhagen and Odense BK in the qualifying round for the Europa League , he missed as a regular in the middle of the national selection, the qualification for the World Cup finals. Also in the following season he was a top performer at the Danish first division, although minor injuries allowed him only 27 league appearances.
For the 2010/11 season he moved to the Turkish Süper Lig club Istanbul Büyükşehir Belediyespor for a transfer fee of 2.2 million euros . Istanbul BB had had major problems filling the position of defensive midfielder in the previous season: The "6s" Barbosa and Marcus Vinícius, who were intended for this task, were partly injured or could not fill this position as desired. Therefore, the club signed Holmén for the upcoming season. This established itself in the team straight away and received very good reviews over the season. In his first season, he and his team won significant victories against the three big Istanbul clubs Fenerbahçe Istanbul , Beşiktaş Istanbul and Galatasaray Istanbul . The defensive player's achievements received special mention from the specialist press. At the end of the season, the team surprisingly reached the final of the Turkish Football Cup for the first time in the club's history . After the final match ended 2-2, they lost to penalties. After this encounter, Holmen was unanimously chosen as the player of the finals. Already after his first season the big clubs were interested in him. Special Galatasaray tried for a long time to get a commitment, this then failed due to an excessively high transfer fee. In his second season he again showed a convincing performance and occupies sixth place in the table with his club.
At the same time, Holmén had also established himself in the Swedish national team, with whom he qualified directly for the final tournament as the best runner-up in the group. As a result, national coach Erik Hamrén appointed him to his 23-player squad for the European Championship finals shortly before the end of the season. Immediately after the end of the season, several clubs tried to get his service - including Bursaspor and Trabzonspor in particular - because of the upcoming European Football Championship in 2012 , however, there was no change until the tournament started.
After his club Istanbul BB missed relegation in the summer of 2013, Holmén moved to city rivals Fenerbahçe Istanbul .
For the 2014/15 season, Holmé was loaned to league rivals Bursaspor . In the summer of 2015 he returned to Fenerbahçe, but was loaned to league rivals Torku Konyaspor after the pre-season preparatory camp .
With the end of his contract with Fenerbahçe in the summer of 2016, he should switch to Konyaspor and sign a two-year contract here. Contrary to these reports, he returned to his previous club, Istanbul Büyükşehir Belediyespor, which had in the meantime been renamed Istanbul Başakşehir .
In the summer of 2017, he dissolved his club, which was still valid for one year, prematurely after mutual agreement with the club management and then returned to his first club, IF Elfsborg.
National team
After jumping into the top lineup at his club, he was appointed to the Swedish U-21 team by junior national coach Tommy Söderberg in August of the same year , where he was first used as a substitute for Andreas Johansson in the 2-0 win over the Greek junior national team . In the further course of the season he was able to hold on to the team, but in the play-off games for qualifying for the U-21 European Championship in 2004 against the Spanish U-21 team , he was only on the bench as a substitute. In the summer of 2004 he was part of the squad at the U-21 European Championship and received the jersey with the number "8" on the back . In the course of the tournament he was used in three games, including the semi-final defeat against the Serbian U-21 team on penalties . In the game for third place, which ended with a goal from Carlitos in the 114th minute with a 2-3 defeat after extra time, he was again only on the bench. After the tournament he was still part of the team and joined her in qualifying for the following U-21 European Championship , but where the team missed the final round as third in the group behind Croatia and Hungary . Parallel to his regular goals at IF Elfsborg, he had established himself as a regular player in the U-21 national team, with whom he competed in the qualifying for the 2007 European Championship . After the first game against the Macedonian junior team was won 3-1, his goal for the interim 1-0 lead in the 2-0 win over the Danish U-21 team played a decisive role in getting back into the Play- Off games at. There he failed, however, in September 2006 with the team after a 3-0 away win, in which he was again one of the goalscorers, by a 0-5 home defeat to the Serbian junior national team.
Holmén's appearances in the Allsvenskan and the junior national team were rewarded in autumn 2006 with his first appointment to the senior national team by national coach Lars Lagerbäck , when he came up after Anders Svensson and Olof Mellberg had canceled . On November 15, 2006 he made his debut at Le Mans in the 0-1 defeat against Ivory Coast by a goal by Didier Drogba in the national team when he came on in the 85th minute for Daniel Andersson . After Holmén established himself at Brøndby IF and had only been included in the national team irregularly by Lagerbäck, he scored the decisive goal in his fifth international match in a 1-0 win over the Costa Rican country selection on the occasion of a tour of South America first international goal. Despite a good season, Holmén was not considered for Swedish selection at the European Championships in 2008 in Austria and Switzerland, but was able to establish himself in the national team after the tournament. In the 2-1 victory over Hungary on September 10, 2008 as part of the qualification for the 2010 World Cup , he scored his first competitive goal in the national jersey with the goal of the 2-0 lead.
