The Greek national U-21 football team (September 5, 2011).

The Greek U-21 national soccer team is a selection team of Greek soccer players . It is subject to the Hellenic Football Federation and represents him on the U-21 level , in friendly matches against the national teams of other national associations, but also at the European Championships of the continental federation UEFA and the Football World Cup of FIFA . Players who have not yet reached the age of 21 and who are Greek citizens are eligible to play. In tournaments, the age at the first qualifying game is decisive.

European championships

The Greek U-21 selection has so far qualified four times for the finals of a European Championship. Her first participation was in 1988, where she was able to advance as an outsider to the final and there faced the U-21 team of France . After the first leg ended 0-0, the second leg was relatively clearly lost 3-0 from a Greek perspective. After they reached the quarter-finals in 1994 and met Spain there , the team had to be eliminated from the tournament after the first round of the final. Four years later, in 1998, both teams met again in this competition. This time, however, victory or defeat would decide the European championship title. A 1-0 win for Spain on May 31, 1998 also lost the second final. In 2002, the Hellenes were eliminated after the preliminary round. After only one point against the eventual European champions Czech Republic , the suitcases had to be packed early.

In qualifying for Euro 2009 , the Greeks were drawn into Group 1 with Italy , Croatia , Albania , Faroe Islands and Azerbaijan . Although Italy was the favorite for first place in this group, the Greeks wanted to qualify for the relegation games via second place. After a 4-1 win against Azerbaijan, a 2-3 defeat against the Croatians followed in the second game. After two more victories, the next opponent was Italy on October 16, 2007. The Greeks were able to wrest a 2-2 from the game and caused a small surprise. In the following game, a revenge against Croatia should follow. However, the team also lost this comparison with one goal difference (3: 4). In the second meeting with Italy, both teams did not get beyond a draw, so that participation in the European Championship for the Greeks was a long way off. In the end, only third place remained with 18 points from ten games.
