Traianos Dellas ( Greek Τραϊανός Δέλλας , Greek pronunciation [ trajaˈnɔs̺ ˈðɛlas̺ ], born January 31, 1976 in Thessaloniki ) is a former Greek football player and current coach.
Player career
Dellas, the colossus of Rhodes , as it was called due to its height of 1.96 m in allusion to one of the wonders of the ancient world , took part with the Greek national team at the 2004 European Championship in Portugal . In the semifinals against the Czech Republic he scored a header goal (105 + 1) in the 15-minute extra time, which led to the 1-0 for Greece in the final. This goal was also the first and last silver goal in European Championship history. He also won the final with the Greeks, where he played through and became European champion. Dellas was elected to the All-Star-Team of the EM.
The defender was not allowed to play for eight months after the change from Perugia to AS Roma was announced by the President of Perugia. With the low match practice from the lower leagues, he could not prevail at AS Roma. His coach Fabio Capello rarely let him appear and he received many yellow and red cards . Only in the 2002/03 season did his form steadily improve. Otto Rehhagel , the coach of the Greek national team, nominated him for the qualifying games of the Greeks for the Euro 2004, in which Dellas played an outstanding final round in the position of a classic libero .
At the Confederations Cup 2005 , the Greek defense chief was not present. He underwent back surgery for sciatic nerve pain .
After the Confed Cup, he returned to his native Greece in 2005 and signed a contract with AEK Athens .
Dellas was part of the Greek squad for the 2008 European Football Championship in Austria and Switzerland , where he was used in all three group games, but the Greeks were disappointed as defending champions in the preliminary round.
In the summer of 2008 he moved to the Cypriot first division club Anorthosis Famagusta . His contract with AEK Athens had previously been terminated. He signed a two-year contract with Famagusta.
Before the 2010/11 season, Dellas moved to AEK Athens to end his career there.
Coaching career
Dellas succeeded Ewald Lienen as coach at AEK Athens after he was dismissed two game days before the end of the season on April 9, 2013. On October 20, 2015, he resigned from this post after a 4-0 defeat at arch rivals Olympiacos Piraeus , and then signed a contract with Atromitos Athens . He worked here until September 19, 2016 and was then without a club for almost a year and a half before Panetolikos signed him in January 2018 . His contract there ended in summer 2019 and he has been without a club since then.
