Stelios Giannakopoulos ( Greek Στυλιανός "Στέλιος" Γιαννακόπουλος ; * July 12, 1974 in Athens ) is a former Greek football player .
Club career
Career start
Giannakopoulos career began in Greece in 1992 with the club Ethnikos Astera, where he was one of the regulars in his first season and scored six goals. After the season was over, he moved to Panileiakos Pyrgou, where he stayed for three years. During this period he scored 26 times in 84 games and thus aroused the desire of the big clubs.
The years at Olympiakos
In the summer of 1996 Olympiacos Piraeus secured his services. In the next seven seasons Giannakopoulos played there as a regular player. In 189 appearances in Olympiakos' dress, he scored 63 goals. He won the Greek championship every season and reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League in the 1998-99 season.
The years at Bolton
After ten years of a successful career in Greece, he moved to Bolton Wanderers in 2003 . He played his first game in the Premier League against Manchester United . He quickly gained a foothold here too and helped the Wanderers reach the final of the 2004 League Cup . He stayed with the Wanderers until the end of the 2007-08 season.
Hull City and AE Larisa
After his contract with the Bolton Wanderers expired, Giannakopoulos was without a club. At the end of September 2008, the until then clubless player moved to the Premier League promoted Hull City . In 2010 he ended his career with Larisa.
Career in the national team
Stelios Giannakopoulos began his career in the Greek national team on March 12, 1997 in the game against Cyprus . One of his important and noteworthy games in the dress of the national team was the game against Spain in the European Championship qualification for Euro 2004 , which was won 1-0. Furthermore, he was one of the regular players in the team that won the 2004 European Football Championship in Portugal . Giannakopoulos has been a key player in the national team for several years and was voted the best footballer in Greece in 2005. In 2005 he also took part in the Confederations Cup , where he played through in all games. In 2008 he was part of the squad for the European Championship in Austria and Switzerland and played 2 of the 3 Greek games.
