Giorgos Karagounis ( Greek Γιώργος Καραγκούνης , born March 6, 1977 in Pyrgos ) is a former Greek football player . With 139 internationals he is Greece's record international player.
Career
Giorgos Karagounis played for Panathinaikos Athens from 1998 to mid-2003 and then moved to Inter Milan . In 2005 he moved from Milan to Benfica Lisbon . After the 2006/07 season, his contract with Benfica was dissolved and Karagounis moved back to his homeland, to Panathinaikos Athens with whom he was able to win the 2010 cup in addition to the championship. After his contract had expired, he signed on September 11, 2012 with Fulham FC a contract until the end of the season.
National team
Karagounis made his debut in the Greek national team on August 20, 1999 in a friendly against El Salvador , which Greece won 3-0. Karagounis scored his first goal in the national dress in his twelfth international match on September 5, 2001 in a World Cup qualifying encounter in Finland , which was also the first game in Greece under Otto Rehhagel .
As a permanent fixture in Rehhagel's team, Karagounis was appointed to the squad for the European Championships in Portugal in 2004 and scored the 1-0 lead in the sixth minute of the opening game against the host team. Karagounis missed two of the six European Championship matches due to yellow card suspension - including the successful final against Portugal for Greece .
In 2005 Karagounis took part in the Confederations Cup in Germany . At the 2008 European Championships in Austria and Switzerland , Karagounis was also part of the regular formation of Greece.
On October 8, 2010 Karagounis completed his 100th international match in the qualifier for the 2012 European Championship. He became the third Greek after Theodoros Zagorakis and Angelos Basinas with at least 100 games for the national team . Opponents in the 1-0 home win was the selection of Latvia . He was also part of the national team at the 2012 European Championship . At this tournament he not only made his 120th appearance in the third group match against Russia on June 16, 2012 , drawing level with the record national player Theodoros Zagorakis, but also made it into the quarter-finals as a goal scorer to a 1-0 victory . However, he was suspended for the quarter-finals because he received the second yellow card against Russia . On October 12, 2012, he made his 121st international match against Bosnia and Herzegovina and has been the sole record holder ever since. After the elimination in the round of 16 of the 2014 World Cup against Costa Rica on June 29, 2014, the team captain resigned from the national team and ended his international career.
