Pantelis Kafes ( Greek Παντελής Καφές , born June 24, 1978 in Veria ) is a former Greek football player who ended his career in 2013. He was the 2004 European football champion with the national team .

Career

In his youth Kafes played at AEP Veria until he moved to the nearby club PAOK in 1997. There he was under contract until 2003. From the 2003/04 to 2006 season he was used in the Greek Alpha Ethniki by Olympiacos . On January 30, 2007 he moved to league rivals AEK Athens . As in Piraeus, he wore the shirt number 1, which is unusual for a field player. Kafes was twice Greek champion with Olympiacos Piraeus (2005, 2006) and twice runner-up with Piraeus (2004) and AEK Athens (2007).

Kafes made his first game in the Greek national team on April 25, 2001 against Croatia . Under national coach Otto Rehhagel he was part of the tournament winner's squad at the 2004 European Championships , but was just as rarely used in Portugal as he was at the 2005 Confederations Cup a year later . In total, he came up to February 2008 on 31 appearances in the national dress. Surprisingly, after two and a half years, he made a comeback under the new national coach Fernando Santos , who used him in a friendly against Serbia on August 10, 2010 . In his 36 international matches, Kafes scored three goals.
