Michalis Kapsis ( Greek Μιχάλης Καψής ; born October 18, 1973 in Athens ) is a former Greek football player .

Career

He played some formidable games for Aris Nikea and Anagennisi Artas in the early 1990s before helping Ethnikos Piraeus to be ranked among the top clubs in Greece in their first season there (1993/94). The success had no negative effects on Kapsis' game, he was used 30 times - the most appearances of his career. He scored only one goal in his 123 games for Ethnikos Piraeus. He moved to AEK Athens during the 1998/99 season .

In 1999 he played 15 more times for AEK and became a regular player in the two following seasons. 2001/02 he was for a dispute on the training ground with goalkeeper Elias Atmatsidis, whereupon AEK surrendered the championship to Olympiacos in the following crucial weeks .

In 2002/03 he played six times for AEK in the UEFA Champions League and 20 times in Alpha Ethniki . Kapsis was one of the few who consistently performed when AEK disappointingly only finished fifth in the 2003/04 season.

Good performances for AEK Athens brought Kapsis a nomination for the squad of the Greek national team qualifying for the European Championship 2004 for the decisive games against Spain and Ukraine ; he covered Raúl and Andrij Shevchenko superbly in these two victories . He was also always present when Greece became European champions at the Euro 2004 and remained a regular player in qualifying for the 2006 FIFA World Cup

After Euro 2004 he left AEK and signed a contract with Girondins Bordeaux . He played 29 league games, but then returned to Greece and signed a two-year contract with champions Olympiakos. In January 2007 he moved to APOEL Nicosia , where he won the championship in the same year.

family

His father Anthimos Kapsis played in 1971 for Panathinaikos Athens in the European Cup final , which was lost 2-0 to Ajax Amsterdam . He was also on the pitch in Greece's first European Championship in 1980.
