Angelos Basinas ( Greek Άγγελος Μπασινάς , born January 3, 1976 in Chalkida ) is a former Greek football player who was the captain of the Greek national team and who won the European Championship with Greece in 2004.

Club career

At the age of twelve, Angelos Basinas switched to the youth academies of Panathinaikos Athens . In 1995 he signed a professional contract with the same club and stayed there until September 2005. With Panathinaikos Basinas was able to win two national championships and a cup victory. From January 2006 to summer 2008, the player, who was active in defensive midfield, played for RCD Mallorca . The Greek had previously had offers from clubs such as Birmingham City , Olympique Marseille and Sampdoria Genoa . In the summer of 2008 he moved to the Greek top club AEK Athens , but left them again in February 2009 and signed a contract with the English premier league club Portsmouth .

For the 2010/11 season he moved to AC Arles-Avignon and signed a one-year contract with an option for another.

National team career

His debut in the national team was Basinas at the age of 22 years on 18 August 1999, in a 7: 0 victory over El Salvador . With Greece he took part in the Portugal European Championship 2004 in Portugal, where his team surprisingly won the title. Basinas was the captain of the Greek national team and led the same through the 2008 European Football Championship in Austria and Switzerland . There he was the captain of all three games, but could not prevent the disappointing departure of the Greeks.
