Angelos Charisteas ( Greek Άγγελος Χαριστέας [ ˈaŋʝɛlɔs xaɾiˈstɛas ]; born February 9, 1980 in Serres ) is a former Greek football player .

Career

Angelos Charisteas started his professional career at the age of 17 in his Greek homeland with the first division club Aris Saloniki , where the striker made nine appearances in his first year and scored two goals. Except for a brief interlude at Athinaikos Athens , he remained loyal to Thessaloniki until 2002.

Werder Bremen and European Championship 2004

He then moved to the German Bundesliga for Werder Bremen . There he celebrated a successful debut and scored nine goals this season as a regular in the storm.

2004 was the most successful year of his career. With Werder Bremen he was both German champions and cup winners in 2003/04 (in the final against Alemannia Aachen he was substituted on in the 88th minute). The success in the club was exceeded by winning the 2004 European Championship in Portugal with the Greek national team , to which he had been a member since 2001. With his three European Championship goals he was the most successful Greek goalscorer. He scored against Spain in the preliminary round and scored 1-0 (65th) against France in the quarterfinals. But above all with the 1-0 winning goal in the final, which was also voted goal of the month by the spectators of the sports show , he became the national hero in Greece. He also got his nicknames Euro-Harry and Europe-Harald.

The following season in Bremen, however, was bad for him. Newcomer Miroslav Klose formed a congenial storm duo with Ivan Klasnić , so that he was suddenly only striker number three and therefore left the club for the winter break.

Netherlands

From 2005 (the second half of the 2004/05 season) he played in the Dutch first division for Ajax Amsterdam . The transfer fee was around five million euros. At the end of the season, Ajax was in second place. In June, Charisteas was in the Greek squad for the Confederations Cup 2005 in Germany. He played full time in all three preliminary round matches, but Greece did not survive the group stage. In the second season Ajax only reached fourth place. However, Amsterdam won the playoffs for the Champions League starting place and the Dutch Cup this year . Charisteas was used there regularly, but was not a regular player. When the new Ajax coach declared in 2006 that Charisteas would only be a substitute for the following season because he did not fit into the intended game system, he left the club shortly after the start of the season. Before the move, Amsterdam had won the 2006 Supercup .

Charisteas switched to Amsterdam's biggest rival, Feyenoord Rotterdam . Despite a very successful year with nine goals in 28 games, he was always overshadowed by the rivalry between the two clubs. After the change he was given the name "The Fallen Angel" (because of his first name Angelos). But he was also the first foreigner who scored in the duels Ajax - Feyenoord both once for the Amsterdam and once for the Rotterdam. In 2007 Feyenoord succeeded in signing the Dutch star striker Roy Makaay and Angelos Charisteas took this as an opportunity to switch back to the Bundesliga.

Nuremberg

For the 2007/08 season , Charisteas joined the reigning DFB Cup winner 1. FC Nürnberg , where he was to replace Markus Schroth, who had migrated to TSV 1860 Munich . He signed a four-year contract until 2011 and, with a transfer fee of around 2.5 million euros, was 1. FC Nürnberg's most expensive purchase in the club's history. His shirt number was 9.

His first assignment was a test match against FSV Erlangen-Bruck on July 11, 2007; after 18 minutes, the Greek scored 1-0. His first competitive game was a home defeat in the 2007 DFL League Cup against Schalke 04. In his second competitive game on August 5, 2007 in the 1st round of the 2007/08 DFB Cup, he scored two goals against the fifth-rate club SC Victoria Hamburg . In the league, however, it was less successful: In the first half of the season he had to contend with injuries, so that he only played seven times. After his first goal of the season on matchday 10, he still managed to score four goals by the winter break. However, he also headed an own goal on matchday 11. Since the club found itself in the middle of the relegation battle in the middle of the season, it was decided to sign Jan Koller . This led to changes in attack and after the return of the long-injured Róbert Vittek , Charisteas rarely played for the full time. In return, he lived up to his nickname Euro-Harry: He scored three goals in six UEFA Cup appearances for Nuremberg. With a total of six league goals in twenty-four missions, he was the club's second-best goalscorer at the end of the 2007/08 season, after which he was relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga.

After the relegation season Charisteas was back in the Greek squad of the European Championship and played in all games for the full time. For the defending champion, however, the end in the preliminary round was already clear after the first two games . In the last game against Spain, which was lost like all games, Charisteas scored the only Greek goal in Euro 2008.

In the event of relegation, he was actually considered one of the safest exits; in fact, he was the only striker who stayed with the club. So he came on the third match day of the 2008/09 season to his first of a total of fourteen second division appearances and was voted Man of the match there. In the next game he shot his first second division goal. But after this one hit remained and the first half of the season did not go as desired for the club, there was again speculation about a change for the winter break. On the first day of the second half of the season, Charisteas was still on the pitch for the Franks. He performed well there and was even considered 'currently the most formidable striker'. But then he was loaned to Bayer 04 Leverkusen until the end of the season.

Some of the fans had already seen Charisteas as a mistake early on. As the most expensive purchase, it was a grateful target for reproaches regarding the lack of success; particularly often he was awarded too bad a chance to make use of the chances.

Loan to Leverkusen

The loan from Bayer 04 Leverkusen took place on February 2, 2009. The reason for Leverkusen was the departure of the also Greek striker Theofanis Gekas . Charisteas was intended primarily as a supplementary player, as the two regular strikers Stefan Kießling and Patrick Helmes had played a very successful first half of the season. In the first game after the loan, Charisteas with the shirt number 29 came on in the 66th minute for Tranquillo Barnetta and scored a goal in the 92nd minute. The winner, however, was the opponent VfB Stuttgart. It was also the first Bundesliga game that Leverkusen played because of the renovation of its own stadium in the Düsseldorf LTU arena and thus the best-attended Leverkusen Bundesliga home game in history with around 35,000 spectators. When Leverkusen won against Bayern in the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup 2008/09 on March 4th, Charisteas came on as a substitute in the 89th minute and prepared the 4-2 through Kießling. In the semi-final of the cup on March 21, 2009 against Mainz 05, Charisteas scored the opening goal and in overtime prepared the 4-1 final score by Michal Kadlec . In the Bundesliga he made a total of 13 appearances, always as a substitute in the second half, ten of which only after the 75th minute. Also in the cup final, Charisteas came on in the 85th minute. Leverkusen was there, however, subject to Charisteas' previous club, SV Werder Bremen.

Return to Nuremberg

After the season, Charisteas left the Werkself and returned to the meanwhile first-class 1. FC Nürnberg. He was already present at the start of training and was substituted on in the first round of the 2009/10 DFB Cup a week before the start of the season . He was also substituted on the first day of the 2009/10 season . There he was ultimately involved in the first goal of the season in Nuremberg: Marek Mintál was able to dust off Charisteas' saved shot on goal. However, the game was lost 1: 2 against Schalke 04. On the second day of the match he also gave an assist as a joker so that he was allowed to play through in the following game. On the fourth day of the game he was substituted on and on the fifth. Then an injury threw him back and he only came on again in the last three first half of the season. In his eight missions before the winter break, he had 305 minutes of play. He began the second half of the season under the new coach Dieter Hecking as a regular player and played through the first five games, before he was substituted on the 23rd matchday at halftime for Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting , to which he then lost his regular place. On the 26th matchday he was substituted on against Hertha BSC for Choupo-Moting and became the match winner in stoppage time with his only goal of the season. Nevertheless, he only made four late substitutions, most recently on matchday 31. The Greek was also not involved in the successful relegation. Ultimately, he came in the season on only 877 minutes of play in 19 missions; with his four assists, however, it was his most successful Bundesliga season so far in this regard.

At the 2010 World Cup , Charisteas was back in the Greek squad . In his team's first game in Group B against South Korea, he was in the starting line-up and even took over the captain's armband from the 46th minute after Giorgos Karagounis was substituted. But already in the 61st minute he had to leave the pitch for Pantelis Kapetanos . In the following two games Charisteas was no longer used, then Greece was eliminated.

AC Arles-Avignon

Before the Bundesliga season 2010/11 it was reported several times that the Greek no longer played a role in the plans of 1. FC Nürnberg and that a club change was sought. On August 16, 2010, Charisteas' move to France to AC Arles-Avignon was announced. There he was only used six times and could not score a goal. On November 27, 2010, Charisteas and Arles-Avignon agreed to terminate the contract immediately. The club was bottom of the table in Ligue 1 2010/11 with just one win from fourteen games. In January 2011, the clubless player kept fit for a few days as a “training guest” at Bundesliga club FC Schalke 04 .

FC Schalke 04

On January 31, 2011, Charisteas signed a contract with FC Schalke 04 until the end of the 2010/11 season . In the first league game for his new employer, he scored the 2-1 winning goal against Eintracht Frankfurt with the first ball contact 52 seconds after being substituted on . In the league he came on three more appearances, as well as a substitution in the Champions League in the home win over Inter Milan on April 13th. At the end of the season, Charisteas won the DFB Cup with Schalke, but without having been used once.

Panetolikos Agrinio

For the 2011/12 season Charisteas returned to Greece as his contract with FC Schalke 04 was not extended. There he joined the climber Panetolikos Agrinio .

On October 11, 2011, he was called up for an international match for the first time since the World Cup. In the last match of qualifying for the European Championship, he equalized against Georgia in the 85th minute. in stoppage time followed the winning goal by Gekas, which Greece qualified directly. In November 2011 Charisteas played in two friendly matches against Russia and Romania , but he was not nominated for the EM 2012 .

In his first year with Panetolikos Agrinio, Charisteas scored four goals in 24 appearances. The club rose as the table penultimate in the second division.

Al-Nasr Sports Club

After more than half a year without a club, Charisteas signed a contract with al-Nasr Sports Club in February 2013 ; he stayed there until summer 2013.
