Miroslav "Miro" Josef Klose ( Polish: Mirosław Józef Klose ; born June 9, 1978 in Opole , Poland ) is a German soccer coach and former player . In the course of his career in the Bundesliga, the striker was under contract with 1. FC Kaiserslautern , SV Werder Bremen and FC Bayern Munich as well as in Serie A with Lazio Rome . With FC Bayern he won the double twice and the Italian Cup once with Lazio Rome .

With 71 goals, he is the most successful goalscorer of the German national team , for which he played from 2001 to 2014. In 2014 he became world champion with the national team in Brazil and with his 16th goal in front of the Brazilian Ronaldo (15) he became the sole record goal scorer . He is also the only player to have appeared in four World Cup semi-finals.

Bayern Munich signed him in May 2018 for two years as the coach of his U17s, and since July 2020 he has been assisting Hansi Flick with the pros.

Life

Klose was the son of German-born soccer player Josef Klose and the former Polish handball national team player Barbara Jeż in the Upper Silesian Opole born. His father belonged to the German minority in Poland . A few months after Klose's birth, his father received a contract as a professional footballer with AJ Auxerre and the family moved to France for almost six years . After a year in Poland, he came to Kusel in the North Palatinate Bergland in 1985 with his parents and older sister as an emigrant . There he attended the local secondary and secondary school and then completed an apprenticeship as a carpenter . He then devoted himself primarily to football, initially as an amateur and later as a professional athlete .

Career

societies

Youth / amateur time

In his youth, Klose first played football at SG Blaubach-Diedelkopf. There he played after leaving the A-youth team in the district league West Palatinate (seventh division). In 1998 - as a 20-year-old - he moved to the regional league club FC 08 Homburg and played there both in the second team in the association league (fifth league) and in the regional league team (third league).

1. FC Kaiserslautern (1999-2004)

Klose (2006)

In 1999 he went to 1. FC Kaiserslautern and played there initially in the amateur team . In April 2000, in his first season, he made two substitutions in the Bundesliga . He played his first Bundesliga game on April 15, 2000 in the home game against Eintracht Frankfurt , when he came on for Jörgen Pettersson in the 76th minute . Klose made his breakthrough in the 2000/01 season , in which he was part of the starting eleven from the fifth match day and formed a successful storm duo together with Vratislav Lokvenc . He scored his first Bundesliga goal on matchday 9 against Werder Bremen . In the game against Energie Cottbus he received the first red card of his professional career. He was also one of the top performers in the Kaiserslautern team in the following years and scored 16 goals in the 2001/02 season , only two fewer than the top scorers Márcio Amoroso and Martin Max . After two weaker years, in which FCK was in danger of relegation despite nine or ten goals from Klose and the club's financial problems grew, he moved to Werder Bremen for the 2004/05 season for a transfer fee of five million euros .

SV Werder Bremen (2004-2007)

In Bremen, Klose signed a contract that ran until June 30, 2008. After a weak start, which put him on the bench and sparked criticism, he had his breakthrough on matchday 6 when he came on at half-time in the game against VfL Bochum and scored the first hat trick of his Bundesliga career. He then performed consistently well and replaced Bremen's top scorer Aílton , who had switched to FC Schalke 04 .

Klose, who had previously been considered a specialist in headed goals , also became more effective on the ground and developed into a team-friendly player, which was demonstrated by his nine assists (with 15 of his own goals) at the end of his first season in Bremen. In the 2005/06 season he was the top scorer in the Bundesliga with 25 goals in 26 games . In the same season, he was also the best player in the scorer ranking with his 14 assists. After a strong first half of the 2006/07 season , a series of eleven consecutive games without scoring followed in the second half of the season , which made him only hit 13 goals this season. Nevertheless, with his 16 assists, he again scored the most points this season .

After the international match of the German national team against Slovakia on June 6, 2007, Klose announced that he would play for Bayern Munich from summer 2008 at the latest .

Bayern Munich (2007-2011)

In the summer break of 2007, Klose moved to FC Bayern Munich. The parties have agreed not to disclose the transfer fee. His contract with FC Bayern Munich was valid for four years until June 30, 2011. Klose received the shirt with the number 18 on his back. His decision to move to FC Bayern, and in particular the circumstances of the transfer, met with criticism from Werder Bremen fans. Therefore he was z. B. whistled at its official farewell in Bremen on August 18, 2007.

With Bayern, Klose won the double of the German championship and the DFB Cup in 2008 and 2010 . In 2010 he and his team also reached the final of the Champions League , which was lost 2-0 to Inter Milan . At the end of the 2010/11 season , the club and the players could not agree on an extension of the expiring contract beyond June 30, 2011. With 121 goals at that time, Klose was the most successful Bundesliga scorer still active after Claudio Pizarro (156 goals) , although his goal rate at Bayern with less than 0.25 per game was significantly worse than at the previous clubs.

Lazio Rome (2011-2016)

For the 2011/12 season Klose moved to Lazio Rome on a free transfer . In the Italian capital he signed a three-year contract that tied him to Lazio until June 2014. His first competitive game in which he also scored his first competitive goal, he completed 18 August 2011 in the Europa League - qualifying match against FK Rabotnički . His first goal in the league, which was also the first goal of the Serie A season at the time , was scored by Klose on September 9, 2011 in the opening match against AC Milan . Because of his achievements, Klose was named the best German footballer active abroad in the preliminary round by the kicker sports magazine . In his second season for Lazio, he scored five goals on matchday 35 against Bologna , something that Roberto Pruzzo had achieved 27 years earlier . On May 26, 2013 he won the Italian Cup with Lazio Rome with a 1-0 win over city rivals AS Roma .

In May 2014, Klose extended his contract for one year with an extension option for another year. In the 4-2 win in the league game against Cagliari Calcio on November 3, 2014, he scored two goals within 60 seconds. In June 2015 he used his extension option, so that his contract with Lazio was valid until summer 2016. In May 2016, Klose announced that he would no longer renew his contract and left Lazio at the end of the 2015/16 season . He ended his playing career in early November 2016.

National team

Klose could choose between three national teams: Germany , where he had lived since he was 7 and his father had his roots, Poland , where he was born and where his mother came from, and France , where he lived six years after he was born. In February 2001, the Polish national coach Jerzy Engel traveled to Kaiserslautern to personally persuade the striker to play for the Polish national team. He declined, however, because he saw a chance of being appointed to the DFB- Elf. Klose never played for a junior national team.

Klose made his debut in the German national team on March 24, 2001 in Leverkusen when he beat Albania . Shortly before the end, he scored the decisive goal to make it 2-1. At the soccer World Cup in 2002 he was runner-up with the German national team and received the silver shoe for the tournament's second-best goalscorer for his five World Cup goals, all of which he scored with his head . No other player has scored five headed goals at a World Cup. He already scored all goals in the group stage and he headed three of them in the 8-0 win over Saudi Arabia in the first group game.

Klose at the 2006 World Cup

Klose also took part in the 2004 European Championship in Portugal with the national team, but hardly got a chance due to a previous injury. The year 2005 was also rather unfortunate for Klose in the national team: Due to an injury, he sat out in the Confederation Cup , only played five international matches and could not score a goal. However, due to his outstanding performance in the 2005/06 Bundesliga season and his team-friendly style of play, he was considered to be a regular player in his own country long before the 2006 World Cup .

In the opening game of the 2006 World Cup against Costa Rica , Klose scored two goals, as well as in the game against Ecuador . In the last 16 match of the German team, he was able to shine with two assists for his strike partner Lukas Podolski and played a major role in the 2-0 victory over Sweden . In the quarter-finals against Argentina , a 5-3 win on penalties , he scored his first header for the national team in almost three years with the equalizer to make it 1-1. These five goals made Klose top scorer at the 2006 World Cup (winner of the Golden Shoe ).

For the 2008 European Football Championship Klose of Germany coach Joachim Loew the squad called the German team. After he could not score a tournament goal in the group stage , he scored a header in a 3-2 win in the quarter-finals against Portugal to make it 2-0. He also scored the goal in the semi-finals against Turkey to make it 2-1 (final score 3-2 ).

Joachim Löw also appointed Klose to the squad for the 2010 World Cup . There were discussions in the German press and public as to whether Klose, who is supposedly in a form crisis, should even be nominated for the starting line-up of the first game after a less strong season at Bayern Munich. Coach Löw stuck to his most successful striker because of the trust he had often justified. In the first game against Australia he scored the second goal of the game, which Germany won 4-0 . In the second game against Serbia , Klose was sent off by the Spanish referee Alberto Undiano Mallenco after a yellow-red card for repeated foul play. In the round of 16 he scored the 1-0 against England , in the quarter-finals the 2-0 and 4-0 against Argentina .

At the European Football Championship in 2012 he was again in the squad and shared the place as a striker in the German team with Mario Gómez . In the three group matches and in the semifinals he was substituted on for Gómez, in the quarter-finals against Greece , in which Klose scored 3-1 for Germany, Gómez was substituted on for him. The German national team was eliminated after a 2-1 defeat in the semi-finals against Italy. On September 6, 2013, Klose scored his 68th international goal in the World Cup qualifier against Austria with the 1-0 and drew level with Gerd Müller in the all-time scorers list of the national team.

In June 2014, Klose was nominated for the German squad for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil . On June 6, 2014, he scored 4-1 in a 6-1 win in the World Cup preparatory game against Armenia , replacing Gerd Müller as the national team's sole record scorer after almost 40 years. At the World Cup he was used for the first time in the second group game against Ghana and immediately after being substituted on he scored his 15th goal at a World Cup to make it 2-2 . With that he set the World Cup scoring record for the Brazilian Ronaldo . After another substitution in the third group game against the USA , Klose was not used in the round of 16 against Algeria . From the quarter-finals against France , however, he was part of the starting line-up until the final . On July 8, 2014, he scored his 16th World Cup goal in a 7-1 win in the semi-final against hosts Brazil with a 2-0 goal and thus became the sole record holder.

The 2014 World Cup final, which the team won 1-0 against Argentina , was Klose's last game for the national team. Less than a month later, on August 11, 2014, Klose announced his retirement from the national team. Together with the players Philipp Lahm and Per Mertesacker , who also retired from the national team after the World Cup , Klose was officially bid farewell to the national team on September 3, 2014 as part of the friendly against Argentina in Düsseldorf . He was no longer in the squad.

coach

After the end of his career, Klose completed an individual training program at the German Football Association from November 2016 in order to later acquire licenses as a coach and football teacher. He was an integral part of the senior national team and accompanied selected measures in the underground area.

From summer 2018, his first position was the U17 of FC Bayern Munich . In May 2018, Klose signed a contract that runs until 2020. In July 2020 he became assistant coach for the professional team under Hansi Flick . At the same time, he is taking part in the DFB's 67th football teacher course , which is taking place digitally for the first time due to the COVID-19 pandemic .

Records

Total international matches

With 71 goals, Klose holds the record for international goals in the German national team. In the ranking of the most successful goal scorers of all national teams , he is only made up of six players Ali Daei (109), Cristiano Ronaldo (85), Ferenc Puskás (84), Pelé (77), Sándor Kocsis and Bashar Abdullah (75 each) and four Players whose goals are sometimes not taken into account by FIFA. In the 21st century , only Cristiano Ronaldo scored more international goals. Klose scored 32 international goals after his 30th birthday. No German player scored more goals at this age .

In the course of his career, Klose made 137 international matches and is only surpassed by Lothar Matthäus (150 games) in Germany , but just like Matthäus he has 87 wins.

World championships

Klose's 16 World Cup goals are the most in the history of the competition

In the ranking of the most successful men's World Cup goal scorers , Klose is at the top with 16 goals. Along with Pelé , Uwe Seeler and Cristiano Ronaldo, he is one of four players who have scored at least one goal each in four World Cups, with Klose and Seeler each scoring at least twice. Klose was the only player to score a World Cup goal on four different continents . He is also the only player in the world to have scored at least four goals in each of three World Cup finals. In two World Cup tournaments, he scored five goals each, which apart from him only his former teammate Thomas Müller and Peruvian Teófilo Cubillas achieved.

In addition, Klose is one of five players who won all three medals at a soccer world championship. While Klose won bronze at the 2006 and 2010 World Cups, silver in 2002 and gold in 2014, the other four players, also all Germans, Franz Beckenbauer , Horst-Dieter Höttges , Sepp Maier and Wolfgang Overath, won their medals in 1966 (silver), 1970 ( Bronze) and 1974 (gold).

As one of six Germans alongside Edmund Conen , Max Morlock , Gerd Müller , Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Thomas Müller , Klose scored three goals in a world championship game, although in contrast to Conen and Gerd Müller, he did not manage a classic (so-called 'flawless') hat trick .

Klose was involved in the most World Cup victories (17) and played the most knockout games (14). With a total of 24 World Cup appearances, he is internationally in second place behind Lothar Matthäus (25) and in front of Paolo Maldini (23). He is also the only player to date to have reached at least the semi-finals of four World Cups in a row. He achieved no worse placement than third place. Together with Pelé , he holds the longest period (twelve years) between two finals.
