Sportsman of the year (Germany)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Since 1947, select the German sports journalist, first in the four Allied occupation zones, from 1949 the Federal Republic of Germany at each end of the German sportswoman of the year and the athlete of the year . Since 1957 a team of the year has also been determined, and since 1964 a female athlete of the year has been evaluated separately. This election was initiated by Kurt Dobbratz , founder of the sports press agency Internationale Sport-Korrespondenz , which is still responsible as the organizer today. Since 1998, the ZDF has been proclaiming the Kurhaus Baden-Badenbroadcast the two years before by ARD .

In the GDR from 1953 to 1989, in contrast to the Federal Republic, an athlete election (see Sportsman of the Year (GDR) ) took place as part of a reader survey by the daily newspaper Junge Welt . A GDR sportswoman of the year was first determined in 1958, and from 1959 also a GDR team of the year. In 1990, the first joint election of the athletes of the year took place in Germany .

In individual sports there are also elections for the outstanding athlete of this sport, so in Germany the basketball player of the year , player of the year in the basketball league , beach volleyball player of the year , footballer of the year , handball player of the year , track and field athlete of the year , cyclist of the year and Volleyball player of the year honored. The Trainer of the Year has also been honored since 2006 , the award is made by the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB).

Special

Ulrike Nasse-Meyfarth was the first female athlete to be elected four times in a row (1981-84), which was only achieved by Steffi Graf (1986-1989), who, at ten years of age, also had the largest time difference between two honors as an individual athlete (1989 and 1999). For Hans Günter Winkler, there were 13 years between two honors (1956 as an individual athlete and 1969 as a member of the show jumping team). With Berti Vogts it was even 26 years between being elected as an active member of the German national soccer team (1970) and being elected as their coach (1996).

So far, athletes have been elected four times in one year both alone and in a team: 1976 Gregor Braun , 1985 Boris Becker, 1997 Jan Ullrich and 1999 Martin Schmitt and once an athlete: 1987 Steffi Graf. The Fed Cup team was also the first all-women team to be voted Team of the Year in 1987.

Another curiosity is the choice of Ria Baran-Falk , who was named Sportswoman of the Year in 1951 and, with her husband Paul Falk, Sportswoman of the Year.

The Olympic champion Ingrid Krämer from Dresden was elected athlete of the year in 1960 in both the Federal Republic and the GDR. With Katrin Krabbe , an athlete from the new federal states was also elected in 1990 in the year of reunification . Heike Drechsler , elected in 2000, was already 1986 Sportswoman of the Year in the GDR.

While in 1964, Roswitha Esser and Annemarie Zimmermann, two female athletes who were active together in the two-man kayak, were chosen in 1966, two female athletes, Helga Hoffmann and Karin Frisch, with the same number of points.

In 1961 Wolfgang Graf Berghe von Trips was posthumously voted Sportsman of the Year.

The youngest individual prize winners were Wiltrud Urselmann in 1957 at the age of 15 for women and Boris Becker in 1985 at 18 for men. The oldest individual prize winners were Karl Kling in 1952 for men and Birgit Fischer in 2004 for women, each aged 42.

In 2011, Dirk Nowitzki was the first team athlete to be named Sportsman of the Year. Nowitzki was second in 2005 and third in 2007. The nomination as Sportsman of the Year 2011 is Nowitzki's second award after the German men's national basketball team was voted Team of the Year in 2005.
