Kirsten Bruhn (born November 3, 1969 in Eutin , Schleswig-Holstein ) is a German swimmer and one of the most famous and successful athletes in German disabled sports .

Life

Kirsten Bruhn has been swimming at competitive levels since she was ten . She passed her high school diploma in 1990 and then went to New Jersey in the United States as an au pair for a year .

In 1991 she wanted to start studying graphics and design, but suffered a motorcycle accident and as a result, incomplete paraplegia with the exception of the anterior thigh muscles. Since this accident she is no longer a pedestrian and needs a wheelchair as an aid. To motivate herself, she continued to practice swimming. In 1993 she completed an apprenticeship as a social security assistant at the AOK Schleswig-Holstein in Neumünster.

In 2002 Bruhn registered for a swimming competition in disabled sports for the first time and already took first place in 50 m back, 3rd place in 100 m back and fourth place in 50 m freestyle and at the International German Championship in Berlin that year 100 m freestyle. Since then she has successfully participated in numerous championships and is one of the fastest handicap swimmers in the world. She is trained by her father Manfred Bruhn.

At the Paralympics in Athens in 2004 she won gold over 100 meters breast, two silver and one bronze. In 2005 it set 9 world, 11 European and 15 German records. In 2004, 2005 and 2008 she was named Sportswoman of the Year with Handicap by the DBS. In 2006 she was nominated as the only German representative for the Laureus Sport Award in Barcelona. At the 2008 Summer Paralympics in Beijing, she won the most medals in the team of the German Disabled Sports Association (DBS) with gold over 100 m breaststroke and world record time in the run, as well as one silver and three bronze medals. At the 2012 Summer Paralympics , she won gold in the 100 m chest and silver in the 100 m back for the third time in a row. She ended her Paralympic career in late 2014. Bruhn has been an ambassador for rehabilitation, prevention and sport at the Unfallkrankenhaus Berlin since 2012 . She is also active as a speaker and speaker in this area.
