The Unfallkrankenhaus Berlin (ukb) is a professional association accident clinic in the Berlin district of Biesdorf in the Marzahn-Hellersdorf district , which was founded in 1997. It is primarily used to treat accident victims and emergency patients from the Berlin-Brandenburg area as well as those with severe burns from all over Germany. The main building is a new building, but most of the historic buildings of the Wilhelm Griesinger Hospital have been added to the ukb. So the story goes back to the end of the 19th century.
meaning
As an academic teaching hospital of the Charité -Universitätsmedizin Berlin, the Unfallkrankenhaus Berlin is involved in national and international research projects and cooperates closely with the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University of Greifswald .
The clinic is a specialized hospital with more than 600 beds, 25 specialist areas and departments, 20 wards and one admission ward, and 15 operating theaters. The number of treatments per year rose from 87,000 in 2011 to around 100,000 patients at the end of 2016. Around a quarter of these are inpatient treatments and three quarters are treated on an outpatient basis.
By the end of 2013, a clinic extension was built on Blumberger Damm for a further three specialties of the accident hospital (marked with (*) in the following overview). In addition, the clinic management took over most of the previous buildings of the Wilhelm Griesinger Hospital and uses them for their administration. While there were two houses on the site for areas of the Vivantes Clinic in 2015, all buildings will be used by the ukb until 2018.

history
prehistory
On November 18, 1893, the Institute for Epileptic Wuhlgarten near Biesdorf was opened in the Wuhletal area . This was a psychiatric clinic located outside the Berlin city limits , which had a railway connection to the Eastern Railway . According to the findings of the doctor Wilhelm Griesinger , the mentally ill should be able to recover primarily through work therapy and recreational opportunities in large parks, the suggestions led to the establishment of workshops, agricultural areas, animal shelters and an autarkic supply system (drinking and sewage, energy supply, heating).
After the initial development, extensions were built in several stages. Around 1940 there were 44 individual buildings including a hospital church . In addition, there was a residential area for the employees of the clinic ( Landhausring ).
The Wilhelm-Griesinger-Krankenhaus , so named in 1968, has been a listed building since 1989 because of its architecture, the way the buildings are integrated into the Wuhletal landscape and the spacious design of the park and outdoor facilities. In 1997 the Vivantes Klinikum Kaulsdorf took over the Wilhelm-Griesinger-Krankenhaus and gradually handed over the area in Biesdorf to the Unfallkrankenhaus Berlin between 1997 and 2016.
Since 1997: ukb
The Unfallkrankenhaus Berlin was opened on September 3, 1997 jointly sponsored by the State of Berlin and commercial employers' liability insurance associations . On July 1, 2003, the State of Berlin withdrew from the sponsorship, so that the commercial employers' liability insurance associations - summarized in the non-profit association Unfallkrankenhaus Berlin Verein für Berufsgenossenschaftliche Heilverarbeitung Berlin e. V. - became the sole carrier. In 2016, the clinic was transferred to the BG Kliniken group - Clinic Association of Statutory Accident Insurance GmbH .
On October 1, 2014, a newly constructed building was opened on the corner of Warener Strasse and Blumberger Damm, right next to the ukb. The health center at the ukb offers a polyclinic , a therapy center, doctor's offices, a weight loss academy and numerous services from the health sector (pharmacy, hearing aid acousticians, podiatry) on a usable area of 10,000 m² .
The historical building of the former Wilhelm-Griesinger-Hospital was gradually taken over by Vivantes Klinikum Kaulsdorf until August 2015, two houses were still open. In some buildings, service providers of the accident hospital are housed, such as the commercial management, information technology, a guest house and a cultural kindergarten . The former administrative complex of the Griesinger Hospital was sold to an investor ( Arcadia ) who is building 32 condominiums here.
The last two historical buildings became the property of the ukb cooperative in 2016, and they will be converted and expanded into the Clinic for Psychosomatics complex . The Heiligenfeld Clinics were found to be the future operator, and the opening is scheduled for autumn 2017.
Directly on Blumberger Damm, behind the multi-storey car park at the health center, the Haus der Gesundheitswirtschaft was built by the end of 2018 and will serve as a smart living model house as well as an AOK care center and a center for simulation training. Furthermore, ukb's own rehabilitation clinic and an acute geriatric unit are in the planning stage (as of September 2017).
The hospital church was extensively renovated and now serves the patients and the public for church purposes as well as for exhibitions and concerts.
Building and structure of the main house
The main building of the ukb is a north-south longitudinal building with four transoms. The eastern parts of the building are connected to each other in height and level, the western parts as well. The western and eastern tracts can only be reached via the ground floor and the central corridor running here.
The building ensemble was created according to designs by the architects' office Karl Schmücker and Partners and was put into operation in 1997. The client was the Main Association of Commercial Employers' Liability Insurance Associations. G. in the state of Berlin.
An important area is the rescue center , which offers 37 treatment options at the same time and has a shock room with four care places. Around 60,000 emergency patients have been treated here every year. Attached to it is a helicopter roof with two separate landing pads.
Art and media
- There are fountains on the large park area and in the eastern entrance to the main building . The long central corridor is adorned by a number of modern works of art that are related to a hospital. There is also a photo exhibition and changing painting exhibitions. In most of the stations, good reproductions of well-known works of art such as van Gogh (sunflowers) or Renoir (water lily plant) can be seen in the corridors.
- Since the 2010s, rbb television has been broadcasting documentaries from ukb on a regular basis
