A shock room , also called a resuscitation room , is often part of a hospital emergency room in Europe . It is used for the initial care of seriously injured or multiple trauma patients. The goal is the fastest possible diagnosis and treatment of the most life-threatening injuries or illnesses. For this reason, the medical staff will already be waiting for the patient in the emergency room if the patient has been notified in advance by the emergency services.

In the past, however, emergency patients from the field of internal medicine were generally not treated there, which has so far separated the concept from that of the American emergency room . However, since internistically ill patients can also have an unstable condition, the term internalist emergency room has also established itself for patients with or after cardiac arrest or generally for patients requiring ventilation or intensive care.

The tasks to be mastered in the emergency room can be divided into three aspects:

These measures must be carried out simultaneously, which places high demands on the facility and the interdisciplinary team. Therefore, regular training and simulation exercises should take place. After the initial treatment, the patient is usually transferred to an intensive care unit or directly to the operating room .

The exact emergency room algorithm varies in the different hospitals, but is mostly based on the ABCDE scheme and the guideline published by the German Society for Trauma Surgery . A supraregional trauma center must be able to care for at least two emergency room patients at the same time.
