Adolf Schmidt (born April 18, 1925 in Holzhausen near Homberg ; † November 26, 2013 in Bochum ) was a German trade unionist and politician ( SPD ). From 1969 to 1985 he was chairman of the IG Bergbau und Energie, and from 1972 to 1987 he was a member of the German Bundestag.

Early years

Schmidt was born in 1925 as the son of a locksmith. He attended elementary school and did an apprenticeship as a pit fitter in Frielendorf from 1939 to 1942 . During the Second World War he was a mechanic in a submarine , was taken prisoner of war , from which he was released in 1945. He then worked again in the lignite factory in Frielendorf, where he was elected to the works council in 1947. In 1950 IG Bergbau sent him to the Academy of Labor in Frankfurt, where he completed his studies.

Schmidt became a member of the SPD in 1949. After completing his studies, he worked as a full-time secretary for youth issues at the trade union in Munich in 1951 and 1952. He was then head of the branch in Breisgau until 1954, and then head of the branch in Gießen until 1963. He spent the next year as collective bargaining and works council secretary, still in Gießen, in 1965 Schmidt took over the management of the Hesse-Rhineland-Palatinate district. Also in 1965 he became a member of the executive committee of the union, which in 1960 had been renamed IG Bergbau und Energie . In November 1969 he became chairman of the mining and energy union. In July 1971 he was elected President of the International Miners' Association and remained so until 1984. He was committed to the production of energy from coal and nuclear energy in order to give coal an economic opportunity. In November 1984 he was re-elected for the last time as chairman of IG Bergbau und Energie, only one year later he resigned from this office.

politics

Schmidt was a member of the German Bundestag from 1972 to 1987 . He was elected every time via the state list of the SPD in North Rhine-Westphalia . In his first three terms he was a full member of the Economic Committee, in the last as a deputy member. He was also an alternate member of the Youth, Family and Health Committee until September 1978.

Honors

In 1985, the year of his resignation, Schmidt was awarded the Great Cross of Merit with Star of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany . A year later, in 1986, he received the Order of Merit of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia . In 1990 he was awarded the State Prize of North Rhine-Westphalia , and in 1994 the Heinrich Brauns Prize .

In memory of the deceased IG-BE chairman Adolf Schmidt, IG Bergbau, Chemie, Energie has renamed its educational facility in Haltern am See the Adolf-Schmidt-Bildungszentrum .
