Hans Berger (born February 28, 1938 in Alsdorf ) is a German trade unionist and politician ( SPD ). From 1990 to 1998 he was a member of the Bundestag and from 1990 to 1997 chairman of the IG Bergbau und Energie . Now he is a member of the IG Bergbau, Chemie, Energie and lives in Klarenthal (Saarbrücken) .

Life

After visiting the elementary school graduated Berger 1953-1956 trained as miners (Miner), and then worked in the underground mining of the mine Anna in Alsdorf.

At the beginning of his apprenticeship, Berger was involved in IG Bergbau and IG Bergbau und Energie. In 1949 he became a member of the Falcons . He was active there for many years as a youth and local association leader. In 1957 he was elected secretary and later local group chairman in the Alsdorf branch of the IG Bergbau und Energie. In 1961 he was elected to the works council of the Anna mine.

When he began his voluntary union activity, Berger attended a series of courses at the Haltern am See union school .

From 1964 to 1966 he studied at the Academy for Labor in Frankfurt, where he worked as an assistant for a year. After completing his time in Frankfurt, he became secretary of his union and worked as a teacher at the union school in Haltern and then eleven years as works council and collective bargaining secretary in the Rhineland district.

In 1978 Berger was appointed district manager of his union in Saarland . In 1984 he was elected to the executive committee of his union, in 1988 he became second chairman and in 1990 first chairman.

During his time as chairman, the difficult work in the course of reunification and hard disputes in the energy and mining industries fell due to numerous structural breaks. Berger also played a key role in the merger of his union with the chemical and leather union .

Berger was on important supervisory boards in the mining and energy industries, mostly as deputy chairman.

In 1990 Berger was elected Vice President of the International Miners Association.

In 1995 the association merged and Berger became President of the International Federation of Chemical, Energy, Mine and General Workers' Unions (ICEM). He held this position until he retired at the end of 1998.

Hans Berger joined the SPD in 1957 , where he performed numerous functions. From 1972 to 1978 he was a member of the district council of the Aachen district.

From 1990 to 1998 he was a member of the German Bundestag for two periods . There he worked in the Economic Committee and in the Social Policy Committee. Berger was elected via the state list of the SPD in North Rhine-Westphalia .

From 1978 to 1984 he was a member of the board of the Federal Miners' Union , from 1988 to 1991 its chairman.

For his work and services, Berger received the Great Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany , the Peter Beier Prize of the Evangelical Church of Rhineland and the honorary professorship at the Georg Agricola Technical University in Bochum. 2017 Hans Berger received the Ring of Honor from the city of Alsdorf.
