Leather union

The leather union ( GL ) was a union of the German Trade Union Confederation (DGB) based in Stuttgart . It was founded in Kornwestheim in 1949 for the three western occupation zones of Germany. In 1990 it had around 45,000 members.

In 1997 the leather union merged with IG Bergbau und Energie (IG BE) and IG Chemie-Papier-Keramik (IG CPK) to form the new IG Bergbau, Chemie, Energie (IG BCE).

The all-German beginnings of GL go back to the year 1872, when the General German Saddlery Association (June 30), the General White Tanners Association of Germany (August 2) and the General Shoemaker Association (November 17–20) in Berlin were founded. In 1893 the Allgemeine Deutsche Weißgerberbund ( General German White Tanners Association) , which in 1882 was renamed the “Association of German Leatherworkers”, and the “Central Association of German Tanners and Leather Dressers” merged. This gave rise to the German Leather Workers' Association, which is open to all workers involved in leather production , with 2,600 members. The organ of the union was the "Lederarbeiter-Zeitung". In 1912, all the individual leather industry unions had around 100,000 members.

After the smashing of the trade unions during the Nazi era , a new unified trade union, the Leather Trade Union , was founded for the three western occupation zones in Kornwestheim at the beginning of April 1949 .
