Vanessa Low (born July 17, 1990 in Schwerin ) is a German - Australian athlete specializing in long jump and sprint in class T61 (formerly: T42 ). She is a Paralympic winner, world and European champion and world record holder .

Life path

Low grew up in Ratzeburg in Schleswig-Holstein . On the evening of June 18, 2006, the student lost her legs in an accident on a platform near Ratzeburg. In the crowd, she stumbled or was pushed onto the platform when a train pulled in . The already sports-enthusiastic student prescribed running with thigh prostheses as therapy and wanted and was able to run again in training when she still had to walk on crutches. Low began competitive sports as soon as possible and started her career in German disabled sports at TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen in 2009 . She made near their training areas buried in 2010 and 2013 a training for media designer in sound and vision at the Cologne Broadcasting Center of the Media Group RTL Germany and worked there at this time as editor of . In 2013 Low initially wanted to end her sporting career to work in the profession. However, the opportunity arose to move to the USA and train full-time in Oklahoma City with Paralympian Roderick Green in order to achieve her great athletic goal of medals at the Paralympic Games at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio . Since 2014 she has therefore been studying remotely in the digital media distance learning course at Wilhelm Büchner University . Lied with the Australian athlete Scott Reardon , she moved to Australia after the 2016 Paralympic Games.

Athletic career

At the IWAS World Championships 2009 in Bangalore she became world champion in the long jump, setting a new world record with 3.92 meters and winning the silver medal over 100 meters in 17.80 seconds.

At the 2011 IPC World Championships in Christchurch (New Zealand) she won bronze over the 100 m. Two years later she won again bronze over the 100 m and bronze in the long jump at the IPC World Championships in Lyon (France).

In August 2012, Low took part in the Summer Paralympic Games in London , where she was fourth in the long jump in sixth with 3.93 m and over 100 meters in 16.78 s.

In 2014, at the International German Championships (IDM) in Berlin, she improved the German record over the 100 m to 15.98 s, making her the second woman with a thigh amputee to undercut the 16.00-second mark. She also improved the world record in the long jump several times. In the same year she won silver over the 100 m and gold in the long jump at the IPC European Championships . She placed in front of the reigning long jump world champion Martina Caironi from Italy.

In 2015 she became world champion long jump with the world record distance of 4.79 m.

In 2016, Low won the gold medal in the new world record distance of 4.93 m in the long jump at the Paralympic Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro . Also in Rio, she ran a new German record in the 100 m finals in 15.17 seconds and thus won the silver medal.

Due to her family move to Australia, Low decided to take on Australian citizenship after the 2016 Games and to start for Australia in the future.

In 2019, Low started for Australia at the World Championships in Dubai and won gold in the long jump with 4.68 m.

On November 1, 2016, she was honored with the silver laurel leaf for her sporting success.

On November 26, 2016 she was named Disabled Athlete of the Year in Cologne .

On March 18, 2012, Low took part in the election of the Federal President for the SPD North Rhine-Westphalia .
