Complete medal table

The 9th IPC Athletics World Championships ( English World Para Athletics Championships ) took place from 7 to 15 November 2019 Dubai , the largest city of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and capital of the emirate of Dubai instead. The competitions were held in the new athletics stadium of the Dubai Club for People of Determination .

With 1,359 athletes from 117 nations competing in 172 medal decisions, the World Championships were better attended than ever before. Since their doping ban in 2016, Russian athletes have been allowed to participate under their national flag. The event was a great opportunity for athletes to qualify for the 2020 Summer Paralympic Games in Tokyo . It was intended to conduct approximately 150 doping tests.

The world championships were mainly financed by the United Nations .

Candidate cities

After the Para World Championships 2017 in London , the city was brought into play for the following Para World Championships in 2019 and initially favored by the British Paralympic Association (BPA) and UK Athletics (UKA). At the end of the application period, however, they announced that an application would not be realistic for financial and time reasons. Months after the application deadline, the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) announced that negotiations with a potential host would continue. Dubai was announced as the venue in mid-June 2018.

criticism

Athletes and officials expressed various points of criticism. They criticized the fact that the sports associations are too willing to award events to the Gulf states striving for reputation, because these are unsuitable for open-air sports events with their poor competition conditions.

The individual points of criticism were:

  • the extremely low number of viewers due to a moderately pronounced sporting culture, the world championships of an up-and-coming sport are not due.
  • the impairment of the seasonal planning, especially in the Paralympics year, since due to the great heat a shift of months into November was inevitable, and thus the recovery time up to the Paralympics is greatly reduced in the event of an injury.
  • after the Para World Championships 2015 in Qatar, the renewed award to the region with the obvious deficiencies for outdoor sports events.
  • the re-admission of Russian athletes despite persistent inconsistencies in the fight against doping.
