Basketball Bundesliga player of the year
The award as Player of the Year of the Basketball Bundesliga (also known as Most Valuable Player of the Basketball Bundesliga ) is an award of the highest German division in men's basketball for the best player ( English : Most Valuable Player , MVP for short ; literally: most valuable player ) each season. According to the more recent understanding, only the regular season or main round of the respective season is meant, as there is another award as Finals Most Valuable Player of the basketball Bundesliga (Finals MVP) for the postseason or final round for the championship title , which is why the award as "Season -MVP "like other honors of the Bundesliga (BBL) are awarded shortly after the end of the main round during the play-offs.
history
From 1988 to 1993 the award for basketball player of the year was given to the best German basketball player of the year. Thus, NBA -Profi Detlef Schrempf after qualification and participation in the 1992 Olympics and his second award as NBA Sixth Man of the Year honored in Germany, although he did not play in the Bundesliga. The best player in the basketball Bundesliga has been honored since 1994, regardless of nationality. Dirk Nowitzki was only able to receive this award in 1999 because, prior to the start of his NBA career, as a result of the lockout in the 1998/99 NBA season, he had also played for his parent club and then first division club DJK Würzburg in the BBL for six months .
Since 2006, the MVP has been elected by a committee of experts consisting of the coaches and the team captains of the BBL clubs as well as selected media representatives. In addition to being honored as Finals MVP, there is a third MVP award, which, as the All-Star Game MVP Award , refers solely to the best player in the BBL All-Star Games .
