history

The DJK Sports Association was founded on September 16, 1920 in Würzburg. Due to the headquarters of the umbrella association, several associated sports clubs were founded in Würzburg over the next few years. However, the various departments were affiliated with other Catholic associations. The clubs were banned during the Third Reich . After the war, the general association DJK Würzburg eV was founded from the various Würzburg departments. Today the association has 3000 members, meanwhile members of other denominations can also become members .

The first women's handball team played from 1976 to 1985, 1987/88 and from 1993 to 1995 in the 1st Bundesliga for a total of twelve years and was there in 1982 as second in the South Season and in 1983 as the champions of the South Season in the play-off semi-finals , but missed the final both times.

The basketball department of the DJK Würzburg eV achieved particular fame. In the 1990s, both women and men were represented in the 1st basketball league. The 1st women's team played for many years in the 2nd and 1st Bundesliga and became German champions in 1993. The first men's team rose in 1989 to the second and in 1998 with Dirk Nowitzki in the first basketball league . In 2001 the DJK Würzburg spun off its first men's team as its own GmbH, which is now called Würzburg Baskets .
