Gordon Walter Herbert (born February 16, 1959 in Penticton , British Columbia ) is a Canadian basketball coach and former player. He was active as a player and coach in Finland for many years and is also a Finnish citizen.

career

Herbert, son of a physical education teacher and a lawyer, played ice hockey and basketball as a boy . His mother had also played the latter sport at university level. He studied at North Idaho College (where he was inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame in 2009) in the United States and then moved to the University of Idaho . He stayed there until 1982. He then went to Belgium for his professional basketball career, and then to Finland for twelve years. The 1.98-meter-tall winger was there from 1982 and until 1994 in the service of five different clubs. With the Canadian national team he took part in the 1984 Olympic Games and the 1986 World Cup. In 1983, he won gold with Canada's student national team at the World Student Games in Edmonton . In 1991 he graduated with a degree in sports psychology .

His playing career ended in 1994 when he became a coach. In Finland he trained UU Korihait and Honka Espoo. He led Espoo to the runner-up in 1998/99, and in 1996/97 and 1997/98 the team under Herbert reached third place in the Finnish first division. In 1999 Herbert switched to the Austrian Bundesliga club Oberwart Gunners and was signed by the German first division club DJK S.Oliver Würzburg after a year in Burgenland . He led the Würzburg team in the 2000/2001 game year as fifth in the Bundesliga championship round, where they were eliminated by Gießen. His season in Würzburg was the "positive turning point in his career," said Herbert later.

He moved to the Skyliners Frankfurt in 2001 within the Bundesliga . Under his leadership, they won the German championship in 2004. The cornerstone of the championship for Herbert's team was good defense. The Frankfurt team only allowed the opponents less than 70 points in 21 games in the 2003/04 season. On the way to the title, Herbert's team managed to cope with injury setbacks despite a thin line-up. His first term in Frankfurt lasted three years, after which Herbert worked as head coach for the French club Paris Basket Racing. He led the indebted capital club in the 2004/05 season despite financial uncertainties to fourth place in the table in the main round before they were eliminated in the quarter-finals. In his second year in Paris, he missed the team's entry into the championship round. In 2006/07 he worked for Élan Béarnais Pau-Orthez , with whom he won the French Cup in the 2006/07 season. Except for the victory in the cup competition, the year in Pau-Orthez was disappointing because of missing the championship round. From 2005 to 2006 he was coach of the Georgian national team in addition to his duties in the club area . From 2007 to 2008 he was the head coach of Aris Thessaloniki in Greece. For the following season Herbert returned to Canada and was responsible for player development assistant coach of the NBA - franchise Toronto Raptors .

In the 2009/10 season Herbert temporarily trained again Honka Espoo. On April 12, 2010 he was presented again as the trainer of the Frankfurt Skyliners . There he replaced Murat Didin , who was released from the Skyliners. This marked the start of Herbert's second term in office after having worked as a trainer for the Skyliners from 2001 to 2004. His contract initially ran until the end of the 2010/2011 season. During this time Herbert led the Skyliners in 2010 in the final series for the German championship as well as in the cup final and in 2011 to second place in the main round. For the 2011/2012 season he moved to Alba Berlin . Herbert failed with Berlin in the quarter-finals of the play-offs against the s.Oliver Baskets and was dismissed in June 2012.

In May 2013 it was announced that Herbert will again be head coach of the Fraport Skyliners from Frankfurt for the 2013/2014 season . This was the third time he took over the post in his career. In 2016 he won the FIBA Europe Cup with Frankfurt and was voted coach of the year in the basketball Bundesliga.

In February 2018, Herbert was appointed coach of the Canadian national basketball team to lead them through the World Cup qualification for the 2019 World Cup. He resigned from his position as Frankfurt head coach after the end of the 2018/19 season. His contract with the club was initially suspended for a year, but he remained connected to the Bundesliga team as a consultant. In June 2019, the Canadian Basketball Association announced that Herbert and Nick Nurse would form the coaching team for the national team at the 2019 World Cup, with Nurse being given the main responsibility in the role of head coach. He then worked as a consultant for the Brooklyn Nets . In May 2020, the Frankfurters announced that Herbert would not return to them because he did not want to give up his position on the coaching staff of the Canadian national team.

For the 2020/21 season Herbert took over the coaching position at the Russian club Awtodor Saratow .
