career

As a player

García Reneses worked as a development player for ten years first for Estudiantes Madrid (1963-1968) and then FC Barcelona (1968-1973). At FC Barcelona he became team captain. As a player, he described himself as "a bad pitcher, slow, smart at choice of game options, strong at pulling to the basket, good at providing templates ... a mixture of all of that."

During his time in Barcelona as a player, he studied physics and telecommunications. Thanks to the knowledge he acquired, he designed electronic basketball scoreboards that were installed in more than thirty sports halls across Spain.

As a trainer

He ended his playing days in 1973 and took up the position of head coach at Círcol Catòlic de Badalona. He stayed there until 1983, followed by two years at the bank of CB Joventut de Badalona .

Between 1985 and 2001 García Reneses worked in various positions for FC Barcelona: from 1985 to 1990, at times in the 1992/93 season and from 1993 to 1997 and from 1998 to 2001 as head coach. From 1990 to 1992 he worked as a sports director. He led “Barca” to nine Spanish championship titles (1987, 88, 89, 90, 95, 96, 97, 99, 2001), and he won the Spanish King's Cup and three with the team in 1987, 88, 94 and 2001 European club competitions: 1986 the Saporta Cup and 1987 and 1999 the Korac Cup . In 1990 Barcelona reached the final of the European Cup under his leadership, but lost to Split. Also in 1996 García Reneses and his team were in the final, but narrowly missed winning the most important European cup when a Barcelona player was blocked by Panathinaikos' Stojan Vrankovic about five seconds before the end of the lay-up . Barcelona saw this defensive action as illegal, but the protest was unsuccessful. The final in the same competition in 1997 García Reneses lost with his team significantly against Olympiacos .

In his second tenure at CB Joventut de Badalona (2002 to 2008), the team won the FIBA Europe Cup in 2006 , the ULEB Cup in 2008 and the Spanish Cup in 2006 and 2008. On October 15, 2005 he continued in Badalona for the first time Ricky Rubio, who at the age of 14 years, eleven months and 24 days became the youngest player to play in a game in the Spanish ACB league .

García Reneses was the head coach of the Spanish national team, which won the silver medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing . This was followed by other positions with Spanish first division clubs: from 2008 to 2011 he sat on the bench at Unicaja Málaga , headed CDB Sevilla between 2012 and 2014 and coached CB Gran Canaria from 2014 to 2016 .

After a one-year break, he took over as head coach at the German Bundesliga club Alba Berlin in the summer of 2017 , making his first move to a foreign club at the age of 70. In his first season in Berlin, the Spaniard was named “Coach of the Year” in the Bundesliga. Under García Reneses, several Berlin talents such as Tim Schneider and Bennet Hundt made the leap into the Bundesliga team. In 2018 and 2019, the Berliners were each German runner-up under his leadership. In the 2018/19 season, the Spaniard also led the team to the final of the European club competition Eurocup, where they lost to Valencia. In 2019, Berlin sports director Himar Ojeda paid tribute to García Reneses' work that it fits perfectly with the team's “desired style of play” and the development of the young players . In February 2020 he led the Berlin team to win the German cup competition and in June 2020 to the championship title: The season-end tournament, which was held after the interruption due to the spread of COVID-19 to determine the German champions, he won with Alba without defeat .
