career
Career start in Europe
Rubio started his career at Joventut de Badalona , made his debut in the Spanish ACB league on October 15, 2005 and was the youngest player to do so at 14 years, 11 months and 24 days. This season he and his club won the FIBA EuroCup with an 88:63 final win over BK Chimki . Almost a year later, on October 24, 2006, he played for the first time in the ULEB Euroleague . Even at this young age he became a key player for Joventut and was one of the best defenders in the league. In the 2007/08 season Juventut succeeded under his leadership as playmaker to win the title in the Spanish Cup and in the ULEB Cup , where Akasvayu Girona could be beaten with 79:54. In February 2008 he was voted the best U22 player in Europe in 2007 , an honor that he received in 2008 and 2009 as well.
On June 25, 2009 Rubio was drafted in the NBA Draft 2009 in fifth place in the first round by the Minnesota Timberwolves , but due to his high fee he stayed in Spain for the time being and moved to league rivals FC Barcelona for the record sum of 3.7 million euros . With the Blaugrana he celebrated numerous successes. Already in his first season he won the title at the Spanish Supercup, the national cup and the ULEB Euroleague , where they won the final against Olympiacos with 86:68. Rubio himself received the Euroleague Rising Star Trophy for the best player under the age of 23. In his second season in Barcelona he was unable to continue his performance of previous years, but with his team he won the triple of Supercup, Cup and Championship in Spain . On June 17, 2011 Rubio announced in a press conference that he was moving to the North American professional league NBA , to the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Change to the NBA
After the start of the season was delayed until December due to the NBA lockout , Rubio was able to establish himself immediately in the league and was elected Western Conference Rookie of the Month for January 2012 . On March 9 of that year, however, Rubio tore a cruciate ligament in his left knee. So he fell out for the rest of the NBA season and also for the Olympic Games in London . In the NBA Rookie of the Year election , Rubio finished second behind Kyrie Irving .
Ricky Rubio celebrated his return after a nine-month injury break on December 15, 2012 in a game against the Dallas Mavericks . On March 12, 2013 he succeeded with 21 points, 13 rebounds and 12 assists in the home game against the San Antonio Spurs, the first triple double of his career.
On February 19, 2014, he set a career record with 17 assists. A month later, on March 19, Rubio recorded his third triple-double with 22 points, 15 assists and 10 rebounds. On October 31, 2014 Rubio extended his contract for another four years. A few days later he suffered an ankle injury and was out for several weeks. He returned on February 2, 2015 and ultimately only played 22 games in the season.
In the game against the New York Knicks on December 16, 2015, Rubio came very close to a quadruple double - he finished the game with 9 points, 10 rebounds, 12 assists and 8 steals. A few days after the fifth triple-double in his career and a career and team record of 19 assists against the Washington Wizards , Rubio set a career record with 33 points on March 30, 2017, in a 119-104 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers . At the end of the 2016/17 season , he had career highs with 11.1 points and 9.1 assists per game. Rubio played a total of six years for the Timberwolves, where he completed 333 games as a starter in 353 games, scoring 10.3 points, 8.5 assists, 4.2 rebounds and 2.1 steals on average. However, he could not reach the playoff with the Wolves during this time.
Rubio was transferred from the Wolves for a draft pick to the Utah Jazz shortly before the Free Agency started in 2017 . On February 4, 2018 Rubio managed to set a new career record of 34 points with a 120-111 victory of Jazz over the San Antonio Spurs . He closed the season with a career record of 13.1 points per game with a 41.8% hit rate and 35.2% three-point hit rate. With the jazz Rubio also reached the NBA playoffs for the first time in his career. In his third playoff game Rubio managed a triple-double in the playoffs for the first time in his career. In the 115-102 victory of Jazz against the Oklahoma City Thunder Rubio scored 26 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists. Most recently in 2001 a triple-double in the playoffs was achieved for the Jazz John Stockton . With the Jazz he reached the second play-off round, which he had to suspend due to a thigh injury. After another season with the Jazz as nominal point guard, Rubio's contract was not renewed with the signing of Mike Conley Jr.
Before the 2019-2020 season, Rubio joined the Phoenix Suns as a free agent . Rubio receives a $ 51 million three-year contract with the Suns.
