career

Spain

Fernández began his career in his hometown of Palma , at CB Sant Josep . In 1997 the then 12-year-old moved to the famous youth academy of Joventut de Badalona . After several successful years in various age groups, he made his debut in the first team on April 7, 2002, a few days after his 17th birthday, in a league game against Real Madrid . In the following season he ran on for both the first and the B-team of the club before he was finally taken over in 2003 in the professional squad. He quickly developed into one of Joventut's most important players, impressed in particular with his athleticism, speed and a good three-point hit rate, and at the Spanish Cup in 2004, despite losing 77:81 in the final against TAU Vitoria , he became the most valuable player in the Tournament chosen.

The next success with his club followed in the 2005/06 season, when he won the FIBA EuroCup with an 88:63 in the final against BK Chimki . Fernández was voted the most valuable player in the final four. Because of his outstanding individual achievements, he was named Young Player of the Year 2006 by FIBA Europe . In addition, he was awarded for his strong ULEB Euro League season 2006/07 the Rising Star Trophy for the best player under 22 years.

In the 2007/08 season they won two titles. In February, Joventut won the national cup with an 82:80 against TAU Vitoria, in return for the defeat four years earlier, and in April Fernández and his team won the ULEB Cup with a 79:54 against Akasvayu Girona . He finished both tournaments as an MVP .

NBA

In the 2007 NBA Draft , Fernández was selected in 24th place in the first round by the Phoenix Suns . Because of his high transfer fee, he stayed with Joventut Badalona for the time being. In the summer of 2008, however, Fernández finally confirmed his move to the NBA , to the Portland Trail Blazers , who had since acquired the rights to him.

On October 28, 2008 he made his debut in the North American professional league against the Los Angeles Lakers and finished the game with 16 points and 4 assists. In January 2009 Fernández was elected fourth participant in the Slam Dunk Contest of the All-Star Weekend 2009 in a fan voting . This also made him the first European in history to take part in this competition. One of the best debutants of the season took part in the Rookie Challenge the day before . At the end of the season, he set a new rookie record with 159 three-point litters and was elected to the All-Rookie Second Team in 2008/09.

In the following game year Fernández struggled with back injuries and was out for several weeks after a spinal disc operation. As a result, he was no longer able to continue his performance from 2008/09 and in the end came only to an operation time of 23.2 minutes per game. Unsatisfied with his role in the team, which was essentially limited to throwing from a distance, Fernández expressed several times before the start of the 2010/11 season through his manager that he wanted to leave the Blazers and return to Europe, which resulted in a total of $ 75,000 in fines "Harmful statements for the league" brought in. Ultimately, he agreed with club management and coach Nate McMillan to stay in Portland and ended the season with an average of 8.6 points and 2.5 assists per game.

After disappointing playoffs in 2011, in which he only played an average of 13 minutes, his departure from the NBA seemed close. However, a surprisingly exchanged the newly crowned NBA champion Dallas Mavericks in Draft 2011 his two draft picks in order to secure the rights of Fernández.

Since 2011/12

In September 2011 Fernández signed a contract with the Spanish club Real Madrid, which ran until 2015 . Part of the agreement was that after the lockout , Fernández would fulfill his contract, which was dated until the end of the 2011/12 NBA season . In late November, an agreement was reached between the NBPA union and the NBA team owners, and Fernández returned to the North American professional league. Meanwhile, the Mavericks had transferred his rights to the Denver Nuggets . There he averaged 8.6 points and 2.4 assists in 39 games of the season before he had to undergo back surgery in March and was out for the rest of the season. Fernández left the NBA in the summer of 2012 and returned to Real Madrid.

The 2012/13 season was successful for Fernández. With Real Madrid he won the title in the Spanish championship and in the Supercup , and he and his team reached the final of the ULEB Euroleague . For his strong individual performances, he was elected to both the All-Euroleague First Team and the All-Tournament Team of the ACB League.
