Fenton Pete Mickeal (born February 22, 1978 in Rock Island , Illinois ) is an American basketball player . Mickeal was selected after completing his studies in the NBA draft , but did not play in the squad of the New York Knicks and the Houston Rockets in the highest-endowed professional league, but then played in the minor league ABA and in Asian professional leagues. After playing in Greece and Spain between 2003 and 2006 , his career picked up again when he was signed by top European club TAU Cerámica in 2007. He then played for this club and FC Barcelona in the Spanish ACB league and won three Spanish championships and four cup competitions in the Copa del Rey . His greatest success was probably the success of the highest-ranking European club competition ULEB Euroleague 2009/10 with FC Barcelona. After a second pulmonary embolism , his career seemed over in 2013, but in early 2014 he signed a new contract in Spain with UCAM Murcia.

Career

Mickeal went from his homeland in 1996 to study in the western state of Iowa at the Indian Hills Community College, whose basketball team Warriors plays in Division I of the "National Junior Collegiate Athletic Association" (NJCAA). With the team he was national champion of the NJCAA twice in 1997 and 1998 and in the second triumph after a perfect season he was also named “ Most Valuable Player ” (MVP) of the final tournament. For further studies Mickeal then went to the University of Cincinnati in 1998 , whose basketball team Bearcats played in the Conference USA of the NCAA . Together with Mickeal, the Bearcats were able to find the team with the best record within their conference, but could not defend the 1998 title won before Mickeal at the championship tournament. With the US student selection, Mickeal won the gold medal at the 1999 Summer Universiade . In the national NCAA finals , you were eliminated twice early in the second round. Nevertheless, with Kenyon Martin in first position, DerMarr Johnson among the "Top Ten" and finally Mickeal himself as the last "pick" of the Entry Draft, three players from the team were selected in the 2000 NBA Draft .

Selected by the Dallas Mavericks, Mickeal was released from his obligations soon after the 2000 draft and signed by the New York Knicks, where he did not play in the NBA 2000/01 and was finally released from his contract at the beginning of 2001. Then Mickeal played in the minor league "American Basketball Association" for the ThunderDawgs from Tampa Bay , who stopped their game operations after a season at the end of the season. In the 2001/02 season Mickeal played for previous league rivals Knights from Kansas City , who won the 2002 ABA championship. Mickeal also received the award as MVP here. After the end of the season Mickeal played in the Philippines for the Talk'n'Text Phone Pals from Quezon City , with whom he made it through to the finals of the Commissioner's Cup of the Philippine Basketball Association . In the pre-season for the NBA 2002/03 Mickeal then got a contract in the NBA with the Houston Rockets, which was dissolved again in early January 2003 without Mickeal having completed a job in the NBA.

After the ABA completely suspended the game in the 2002/03 season, Mickeal finally signed a contract with GS Peristeri near Athens in Greece for the remainder of the 2003/04 season after a two-week stint in the CBA with the Yakima Sun Kings A1 Ethniki . With Peristeri he reached in the 2003/04 season on the seventh main round place in the play-offs for the championship, in which they were eliminated in the first round against GS Marousi . The following 2004/05 season began Mickeal first with the Russian club Dynamo in Moscow , before he played in November 2004 to Greece for the Makedonikos club in Kozani . With this club he reached in the second most important European club competition ULEB Cup 2004/05 , in which he was three times the most effective player of a game day, the final game, which was lost against Lietuvos rytas Vilnius despite 24 points and nine rebounds by Mickeal with 74:78. In the following season 2005/06 Mickeal was then active in the Spanish ACB league for Leche Río Breogán from the Galician Lugo , who, however, had to relegate at the end of the season as bottom of the table. Despite this, Mickeal was named the most effective player in the ACB league on six out of 34 match days and three times as the most effective player, also named Player of the Month. For the following season, however, Mickeal first went back to Asia and played in the Korean Basketball League for the Orions from Daegu .

For the 2007/08 season, the top European club TAU Cerámica from Vitoria-Gasteiz brought Mickeal back to the ACB league. In the highest-ranking European club competition ULEB Euroleague 2007/08 , they reached the “ Final Four ” tournament for the fourth time in a row and, after two narrow defeats, finished fourth with a difference of four points. As the main round fourth of the ACB league they moved into the Spanish championship play-offs and remained unbeaten there except for a first-round defeat against Pamesa Valencia . In the final series they defeated runners-up FC Barcelona, who had defeated TAU Cerámica, who won the main round in the semifinals, last year. Mickeal was named MVP of the final series in the Basque club's second championship win . A year later they lost in a new edition of the final series as defending champion, cup winner in the Copa del Rey and main round first the Catalans , who had narrowly defeated the Basque team in the quarter-final play-offs of the ULEB Euroleague 2008/09 . Mickeal was the most effective player MVP of the 22nd matchday of the ACB League. After the season he moved to the championship in Barcelona in 2009, where he was named “Player of the Month” of the ULEB Euroleague 2009/10 in November 2009 . In the end you could win this competition with only two defeats in total, whereby you won the two games in the Final Four with no less than ten points difference. This was only the second title win in the highest European club competition for the club since the premiere in 2003. Even in the final series of the Spanish championship, after only three defeats of the season as the main round first and cup winners in the Copa del Rey, they moved pretty undisputed. In the final series there was a clash with Mickeal's former club from Vitoria-Gasteiz for the third time in a row, which they won in three tight games, so that Barcelona missed the triple .

In the 2010/11 season Mickeal first struggled with a knee injury that had to be treated surgically in December 2010 and finally suffered a pulmonary embolism in February 2011 , which meant the premature end of the season for him. His team was able to successfully defend the title in the Copa del Rey, but in the ULEB Euroleague 2010/11 they lost the quarter-final play-off series against the eventual title winner Panathinaikos Athens as defending champions . For this, he retaliated in the national championship in the semi-final series against the defending champion Caja Laboral from Vitoria-Gasteiz and also won the final series against the surprise finalist Bizkaia Bilbao Basket . In the end, they remained in the national play-offs without defeat and won the title back. In the 2011/12 season Mickeal returned to the field at the age of 33 and in the cup competition it was the third time in a row the final pairing between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid , which this time had the better end for themselves and the Copa del Rey for the first time since 1993 successful club from the capital won. In the final series of the championship, Barcelona were able to retaliate and defend their title against the “royal” from the capital in five games. In the ULEB Euroleague 2011/12 the Catalans were among the top favorites and only lost one game until the “Final Four”. In the semifinals, however, there was a defeat against the eventual title winner Olympiacos Piraeus , so that the victory over defending champion Panathinaikos Athens in the small final for third place was little consolation. In the Copa del Rey 2013 the title was taken back and Mickeal was named MVP of the Spanish Cup competition for the first time when he personally won the fourth title. Later there was a heated argument with coach Xavi Pascual , which became public. After speculating about a departure from Mickeal, another pulmonary embolism shortly afterwards caused his time in Barcelona to end. After the second pulmonary embolism, this farewell was initially interpreted as the end of his career, but Mickeal signed a contract with UCAM from Murcia in early January 2014 and returned to the field at the age of almost 36. After a month and five championship appearances, Mickeal left the team and continued his career with the Cangrejeros from Santurce in the Puerto Rican Baloncesto Superior Nacional .
