Roberto Dueñas Hernández (born November 1, 1975 in Madrid ) is a former Spanish basketball player . With a height of 221 cm he is the tallest Spanish basketball player of all time and was one of the most dominant centers in European basketball during his time at FC Barcelona .

career

Roberto Dueñas, who suffers from gigantic stature due to a malfunction of the pituitary gland , was playing in the youth of CB Móstoles when he was 17 when he was discovered in a bus station and invited to a trial training session with the second division club Baloncesto Fuenlabrada and later signed. His talent was quickly recognized and so the Spanish top club FC Barcelona secured his services in 1994, but loaned him to Fuenlabrada in 1994/95. In the 1995/96 season he played most of the time for CB Cornellà , which also served as a farm team for FC Barcelona, ​​but made his debut on December 17, 1995 in a game against CB Gran Canaria in the ACB league . In the following season he was already a member of the professional squad of the Catalans, but mostly came off the bench during the regular season. His breakthrough should follow in 1997 in the playoffs for the championship, where he rose to a key player in the final series against arch rivals Real Madrid . In the decisive fifth game Dueñas got 13 points, 12 rebounds and 2 blocks . Dueñas was honored for his performance as MVP of the final playoffs. The following summer, the young Spaniard was drafted as the 58th pick by the Chicago Bulls and was only the third Spaniard to be selected by an NBA team. However, he decided to stay in Europe. During his ten years at Barça he should achieve numerous successes, in addition to winning six championship titles and two cup wins, he and his team also attracted international attention. In the Euroleague season 2002/03 he won the title with FC Barcelona and ended the season as the team's best rebouder, dueñas had already won the Korać Cup in 1998/99 . Dueñas not only impressed with his size and defensive strength as a rebounder and shot blocker, his qualities also included his passing game and his overview. For the 2005/06 season he left FC Barcelona and moved to Akasvayu Girona , where, however, due to numerous injuries, he could not connect to the performances of previous days. In November 2006 he left the club towards Joventut de Badalona , where he only made 10 appearances and announced his retirement from active basketball at the end of the season due to chronic back problems. As a tribute, his jersey number 12 was banned from his long-time club FC Barcelona.

After his active career, Roberto Dueñas switched to the coaching staff at FC Barcelona, ​​where he works in the youth field and as a scout.

National team

Roberto Dueñas took part in the U-22 European Championship with Spain in 1996 and only failed in the final against Lithuania. He made his debut for the senior national team on June 15, 1997 in a friendly against Greece . At both the 1997 European Championships and the 1998 World Cup , Dueñas was part of the Spanish squad and finished both tournaments in fifth place. He celebrated his greatest success at the European Championship in 1999 , where he and his team only failed in the final with 56:64 against Italy and won silver.
