The 14th World Basketball Championships the men took from July 29 to August 9, 1998 in Maroussi and Piraeus in Athens in Greece instead.

The national team of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia became world champions when they participated for the first time after the dissolution of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia . The team from Russia became vice world champions . Third place went to the defending champion from the United States , who was due to a lockout without an NBA player . Germany, Austria and Switzerland could not qualify for participation in this World Cup.

Venues

The games were played in the Olympic Hall in Marousi and in the Stadium of Peace and Friendship in Piraeus .

The intermediate round matches of groups E and F were played from August 2 to 4, 1998. The results achieved in the preliminary round against the group opponents were adopted. The four best teams of the groups reached the quarter-finals , the last two reached the round for 9-12 place .
