European championships

Scene from the encounter between Greece and Turkey (EM 2009)

For the first time, the Greek national team took part in a European Championship in 1949 and immediately won third place. As a result, Greece took part in the finals only irregularly until 1985 and had no particular success to show. The first major success that was to be the breakthrough for the national team in Greece was winning the European Championship in 1987. In their own country, Greece defeated the highly favored team from the Soviet Union in the final after extra time with 103: 101. The star of this tournament was, to date, the greatest Greek sports icon Nikos Galis , who was elected MVP of the tournament. At the following tournament in 1989, Greece again reached the final, but had to admit defeat to the Yugoslav team, which, led by their star Dražen Petrović , could win the tournament without a defeat. With the silver medal in 1989, Greece consolidated its position among Europe's leading basketball nations two years earlier. Since then, the Greek national team has not missed a final round at European Championships and has usually always ended up in the top ranks. In 2005 Greece finally won its second gold medal in Serbia after beating the German national team with 78:62 in the final . The defense of the title at the following tournament failed with the defeat against Spain in the semi-finals. The Greeks also passed the game for third place to the Lithuanian team. In 2009 the national team of Greece failed again in the semifinals against later European champions Spain. While, measured by your own standards, you achieved two rather disappointing placements at the tournaments in 2011 and 2013. In 2015, after all nominated players had announced their commitment to participate in the tournament, expectations were raised again with a placement among the top three. This hope ended in the quarter-finals again the Spanish team, which the Greeks were able to defeat with 73:71 points. After reaching 5th place, Vasilis Spanoulis , head and leading player of this selection, announced his retirement from the national team.
