At club level

Koufos, who grew up in the United States as the son of Greek immigrants, played for a year for the college team at Ohio State University . He was selected 23rd in the first round of the 2008 NBA Draft by the Utah Jazz . Koufos made his debut in the NBA on November 1, 2008 in an encounter against the Los Angeles Clippers . On November 11, 2008 he got his first NBA points when playing against the Philadelphia 76ers . In his first two years, however, Koufos switched a lot between jazz and the jazz farm team, the Utah Flash . After two years, he was transferred to the Minnesota Timberwolves in the summer of 2010 along with future draft selection rights for Al Jefferson . After a few games for the Wolves, he played for the Denver Nuggets from February 2011 . With 16 rebounds he achieved his previous career best in the home game against the Memphis Grizzlies on March 15, 2013. In the 2012/13 season he established himself as a regular player and achieved career bests with 8.0 points, 1.3 blocks and 6.9 rebounds .

For the 2013/14 season Koufos was given to the Memphis Grizzlies in exchange for Darrell Arthur from the Nuggets. In Memphis he mostly played as a substitute for the Spanish center Marc Gasol . For the Grizzlies Koufos played until the summer of 2015. After his contract expired, he joined the Sacramento Kings . As in the previous course of his professional career, he was a reliable player with the Californians who, as a board center with a classic character, was particularly noticeable for his defense work and collecting rebounds, but usually only played a subordinate role in the attack.

At the age of 30, he left the NBA during the 2019 summer break and joined the top Russian team CSKA Moscow .
