The Euro League is under the umbrella of Euro League Basketball been registered competition for European Basketball - club teams of men. It forms the most important of all competitions within the framework of the annual European basketball cup before the EuroCup and the FIBA Europe competition , the FIBA Europe Cup .
For sponsorship reasons, the EuroLeague has been officially called Turkish Airlines EuroLeague since the 2010/11 season . The contract with the airline runs until 2020.
history
The EuroLeague was held for the first time in the 2000/01 season. 24 teams turned their backs on FIBA this summer and started in the newly founded league. The inevitable consequence of this was that the previous European Cup competition under the auspices of FIBA lost its importance and was finally discontinued after this season - in which it was carried out under the new name Suproleague . The winner of the first EuroLeague was the Italian team Kinder Bologna , which defeated TAU Ceramica from Spain in the final.
In the 2001/02 season, the league was increased to 32 teams. The winner was Panathinaikos Athens , who beat last year's winner from Bologna in the final. Since there was a large gap in performance within the league, those responsible decided to reduce the number of teams again in the following season. In the summer of 2002, only 24 teams started the new season, which were divided into three groups of eight. The winning team came from Barcelona this season. In the following two years, 2004 and 2005, Maccabi Tel Aviv was able to secure the most coveted European basketball award. In 2006 and 2007, CSKA Moscow and Panathinaikos Athens won the Euroleague.
The 2019/20 season , which had been interrupted in March of that year due to the COVID-19 pandemic , was canceled in mid-May 2020 .
Attendees
The EuroLeague is a so-called "closed" league. The participants can change from year to year, but fixed starting places for associations or even individual teams prevent high fluctuation . In the 2018/19 season the 16 starting places are allocated as follows:
- Spain : 4
- Russia : 3
- Germany , Greece , Turkey : 2 each
- France , Lithuania , Israel , Italy , Serbia : 1 each
When allocating starting places, the Euroleague operates with A and B licenses as well as wild cards. The criteria for a license are national and international sporting success, the size of the sports hall available and the club's media presence.
With FC Barcelona , Laboral Kutxa Vitoria , Žalgiris Kaunas and Olympiacos Piraeus, there are four teams that have been in the EuroLeague every year since 2000 and have not missed a season.
Game mode
The current game mode sees the competition divided into three phases.
- Group stage - regular season: In this first phase, the 18 teams compete in a group in home and return matches. The eight best in the group qualify for the next round.
- Playoffs: In a "Best of Five" mode, the remaining eight teams compete against each other in four team encounters. The first in the group from the second phase enjoy home rights if a fifth playoff game is required. The four teams that can win these duels qualify for the final tournament.
- Final four tournament: In a tournament that takes place within a weekend, two teams compete against each other in semi-finals and play out the winner in a single elimination game. These winners qualify for the final from which the winner of the EuroLeague is determined.
All finals
* In 2001 no Final Four tournament has been held. The decision was made in a "Best of Five" series.
