The Suproleague was a basketball competition held once by FIBA Europe , which, together with the ULEB Euroleague, was the most important competition for European club teams in the 2000/01 season.
history
After the founding of the competition association ULEB , the world association FIBA was faced with the situation that more and more clubs and associations withdrew from their own competitions and joined those of the ULEB. In order to counteract this development, FIBA reorganized its European Cup - which was renamed the European Championship in 1991 and the Euroleague in 1996 - and proclaimed the Suproleague .
Unlike its counterpart - the ULEB Euroleague - those responsible for the league did not succeed in attracting sufficiently attractive teams for this competition. With Maccabi Tel Aviv , Panathinaikos Athens , CSKA Moscow and Efes Pilsen Istanbul , only four of the 20 participating teams belonged to the European elite. It was not just for this reason that the competition was discontinued after just one season. With ALBA Berlin and Bayer Giants Leverkusen , two German teams were also represented.
In the summer of 2001, ULEB and FIBA finally agreed that from now on the ULEB and the Euroleague should be the main competition in Europe.
The winner of the one-off competition was the Israeli team from Maccabi Tel Aviv , which defeated the Greek representative Panathinaikos Athens in Paris with 81:67 in the final .

The Suproleague was together with the Euroleague in the 2000/01 season before the Saporta Cup and the Korać Cup, the most important continental competition in basketball. Although there were more big clubs in the Euroleague than in the Suproleague, with Panathinaikos Athens , Maccabi Tel Aviv and CSKA Moscow , the most successful clubs in the ULEB Euroleague to date have all participated in the FIBA Suproleague.
FIBA and ULEB later agreed that both the winner of the Suproleague and the winner of the Euroleague are considered to be European champions for that season.
