The season 2000/01 was the 1 . Season of the EuroLeague , the most important competition in European club basketball. In the 2000/01 basketball season there was a special feature that ULEB and FIBA each held a competition for the best European club teams. The FIBA Suproleague ran parallel to the Euroleague . Because of this, there have been two continental champions this season.

While the Euroleague was won by Virtus Bologna from Italy , Maccabi Tel Aviv from Israel triumphed in the Suproleague .

In this first phase, the 24 teams divided into four groups (A to D) competed against each other in home and away games until each team had played 10 games. The four best teams from each group qualified for the next round.
