Hapoel Jerusalem is an Israeli basketball club based in Jerusalem . Hapoel currently plays in the Ligat ha'Al and in the Eurocup .

history

The first mention of basketball in connection with Hapoel Jerusalem is in 1935. During the fourth Hapoel meeting there was a basketball tournament with teams from Jerusalem, Yehuda, Tel-Aviv and Shomron. Official establishment of the basketball department took place in 1943. Since then, the club has participated in tournaments and friendly games.

The first participation in the Israeli championship took place in 1955, one year after the establishment of the highest Israeli league. In the first three decades, the team did not achieve any notable success and often shuttled between the highest and second Israeli leagues. Hapoel's last ascent was in 1986. Since then, the club has played continuously in the highest Israeli league. In the 1990/91 season Hapoel reached the Israeli play-offs for the first time. In the same season, the team started for the first time in a European cup, the Korać Cup . In the 1990s, Hapoel won its first national title with two cup wins in 1996 and 1997. The opponent in both finals was Maccabi Tel-Aviv . After Hapoel was a regular participant in various European cup competitions in the following years and failed in the semifinals of the Saporta Cup in 2002, the ULEB Cup won its first international title in 2004 . In the final in Charleroi, Real Madrid were beaten 83:72. With two further national cup wins in 2006 and 2007, the first decade of the 21st century was the most successful in the history of Hapoel.

In 2015 the club became Israeli champions for the first time.
