Marcelo Patricio Nicola Virginio (born May 12, 1971 in Rafaela , Argentina ) is a former Argentine basketball player and today's coach.

Player career

In the club

Marcelo Nicola began his professional career in 1988 at the Argentine sports club Santa Fe, where he was under contract for one season. When he moved to Europe in 1989 , the Power Forward began a successful career that led him through the leading European championships in Spain , Greece and Italy . Nicola played for the top teams TAU Ceramica , Panathinaikos Athens and FC Barcelona , among others . From 1989 to 2007 Nicola was able to win a number of titles and was selected in 1993 by the Houston Rockets in 50th place in the NBA Drafts . The power forward had its most successful phase with the Italian first division club Benetton Treviso . In addition to two championships, three cup wins and two Supercup titles, Nicola won the Saporta Cup for the second time in his career in 1999 and also reached the final of the ULEB Euroleague in 2003 . In 2005 Nikola reached the final of the FIBA EuroCup with BC Kiev .

In the national team

With the Argentine national team , Nicola participated in the 1994 and 1998 World Championships and the 1996 Olympic Games .

Coaching career

After his active career, Nikola took over the post of co-trainer at his former club Benetton Treviso, under coach Oktay Mahmuti. From February to November 2015 he was the head coach of Lietuvos rytas Vilnius .
