Rafaela is a city in northern Argentina , located in the western center of the Santa Fe province . It is the capital of the Departamento Castellanos , and with around 93,000 inhabitants (2010, INDEC ) the third largest city in the province.
geography
Rafaela lies in the transition area between the humid pampas and the bush forests of the Gran Chaco at an altitude of 90 meters. The surrounding area is used intensively for agriculture, so that little remains of the original landscape.
climate
The climate is subtropical and humid all year round. The average annual rainfall is 951 millimeters. Temperatures average between 6 and 18 degrees Celsius in winter and 18 and 31 degrees Celsius in summer.
history
Rafaela was in 1881 by businessman Guillermo (Wilhelm) Lehmann (born in Sigmaringendorf , today's twin city Rafaelas) was founded. The city then grew very quickly and was connected to the railway network in 1890. It soon developed into one of the richest cities in the region. Today the city has around 90,000 inhabitants.

Buildings
The city has several buildings from the last years of the 19th century. The cathedral and the Ripamonti commercial building stand out .
Sports
Rafaela owns a famous car racing track where several national competitions are held. In addition, the football club Atlético de Rafaela has its headquarters here, which plays its home games in the Estadio Monumental Rafaela and has already played in the first division of Argentina ( Primera División ) several times . Another big football club in town is Sportivo Ben Hur .

Rafaela is mainly characterized by industry, with the textile, paper, metal and agricultural industries predominating. It is also the center of an agriculturally rich region, which can be seen in several service companies. Rafaela is one of the most important cities in a region known as Cuenca lechera in the Argentine provinces of Santa Fe and Córdoba, which is particularly characterized by the production of dairy products.
traffic
The distance to the provincial capital Santa Fé via the Ruta Provincial 70 is 90 kilometers. The Ruta Nacional 34 , which runs in north-south direction, connects Rafaela with Rosario (230 km) and Buenos Aires (530 km). An alternative to this is the Ferrocarril Nuevo Central Argentino , which connects the same cities.
