The Asociación Mutual Social y Deportiva Atlético de Rafaela or short Atlético de Rafaela is an Argentine football club from Rafaela , Santa Fe . The club, founded in 1907, plays in the 2011/12 season in the Primera División , the top division of Argentine football and is city rivals of Sportivo Ben Hur .

The club's nickname is La Crema because of the importance of dairy farming in Rafaela .

history

In 1907 the club was founded as Club Atlético Argentino de Rafaela . In 1915 the name Club Atlético de Rafaela was chosen .

In 1988 the association was converted to a non-profit-oriented company and renamed Asociación Mutual Social y Deportiva Atlético de Rafaela . A year later, the club reached the second division for the first time. Atlético de Rafaela played second class for 14 years before they finally reached the first division in the Apertura 2002 and the Clausura 2003. Only a year later, however, the bitter decline followed. Since then, they played second class until they were promoted again with the 2011 championship.

Rafaela is currently experiencing the most successful period in the club's history. La Crema has never been at the top of the table, and the two promotions to the top division (2003 and 2011) were among the greatest sporting successes. In the past season, La Crema pulled away early and rose confidently as the table leader directly into the Primera. Promotion guaranteed was a certain César Carignano, who at the same time advanced to the top scorer of the Nacional B with 21 goals. Carignano is no stranger to Europe. Under Christian Gross, the center forward completed 22 games for Basel in the 2004/05 season, in which he let the bell ring a total of nine times in the league and UEFA Cup. The outcry among the newcomers was accordingly great when you had to let your goal machine go to Chile to Universidad Católica.

But a successor was quickly found. With Darío Gandín they not only got an equivalent replacement in the storm center, but at the same time the club celebrated the return of one of their heroes. Gandín, who is only called Chipi , was part of the legendary promotion team of 2002/03. Right at the start of the season in Banfield, el Chipi tied a brace after just twelve minutes, a lead that they managed to beat despite being sent off twice . La Crema was able to confirm their soaring flight for a few more weeks, with 26 points they finally ended up in tenth place in the table.

Stadion

Atlético de Rafaela plays in the Estadio Monumental Rafaela , which offers space for 16,000 spectators.
