Ibrahim Sekagya [ sekaʤa ] (born December 19, 1980 in Kampala ) is a Ugandan former football player and was the captain of the national team of his home country .
Career
Ibrahim Sekagya started his professional career in his hometown with Kampala City Council FC . In 2001 he moved to the Argentine second division to Atlético de Rafaela . After another move to Ferro Carril Oeste , he was committed in 2005 by the Argentine first division club Arsenal de Sarandí . In June 2007 he was finally transferred from Arsenal de Sarandí to Europe to Red Bull Salzburg for 1 million euros and was Uganda's most expensive player until then.
Sekagya's move to Salzburg initially caused unrest within the club. After assistant coach Lothar Matthäus had publicly expressed doubts about the obligation of the Ugandan international, the club management took this as an opportunity to take the German off. Other differences of opinion between the club and Matthäus preceded this, however. Sekagya developed into a regular player and top performer of the Salzburg team within a short time. The central defender, who was strong in duels and headed the ball, quickly received the status of a crowd favorite and was meanwhile also captain of the team. During his time at Salzburg he was able to celebrate three championships and one cup win.
After his contract in Salzburg was not renewed, he signed a contract with the New York Red Bulls in July 2013 , where he played with Thierry Henry , Tim Cahill and Juninho , among others . After two seasons in the MLS , Sekagya ended his active professional career in December 2014 and switched to the support staff of the Red Bulls from New York .
Sekagya was the captain of the Ugandan national soccer team and ended his team career in early 2012.
