1st round games
On July 25, 2011, the games of the first main round were drawn as part of the “Samsung Cup Night” in the Kursalon in Vienna . With the 33 winners of the preliminary round, the 20 professional teams of the Bundesliga and the First League, the 9 cup winners of the regional associations and the two teams eliminated in the relegation games, 64 teams are eligible to participate in the first round. This resulted in a total of 32 fixtures. The professional clubs of the Bundesliga and the First League were consistently set as visiting teams due to the implementation regulations of the ÖFB Cup (§ 5).
The first matchday brought three tangible surprises, because the Bundesliga club SC Wiener Neustadt had to admit defeat by the second team of SK Rapid Wien (Regionalliga) with 0: 1, the first division club SKN St. Pölten slipped in stoppage time at the regional league team in a 2: 3 defeat and ultimately the first division team of First Vienna FC 1894 suffered a downright debacle with the second team of FK Austria Wien (Regionalliga) with 0: 4.
On the second day of the match, SCR Altach, another professional team, had to take note of the elimination. The championship favorites of the first division embarrassed themselves at the state division Union St. Florian with a 0-2 defeat. SK Rapid Wien landed the highest victory in the first round, winning 7-0 against the second team of LASK Linz. Hamdi Salihi not only scored a flawless hat trick , but also contributed a total of five goals to the 7-0 victory. The four goals with which Philipp Hosiner led FC Admira Wacker Mödling to a 6-1 win at SK Vorwärts Steyr were also outstanding . The duel between the regional division WSG Swarovski Wattens and the state division SV St. Margarethen was not for the faint of heart. The guests only scored a 2-2 equalizer from a penalty in extra time and then prevailed 5-3 on penalties, making the long journey from Burgenland to Tyrol worthwhile.
Sunday, when the qualifiers for the UEFA Europa League had to compete, brought no surprises . Cup title defender SV Ried achieved a 3-0 victory at FC Gratkorn, who were relegated to the First League. With the same result, FC Red Bull Salzburg prevailed against the regional division ASK Baugarten. This game had to be interrupted for 20 minutes due to a downpour and thunderstorm. After a 0-1 deficit against the second team of FC Admira Wacker Mödling, FK Austria Wien prevailed 3-1.

2nd round
The draw for the games in the second round took place on August 16, 2011 at the Hotel Hilton Vienna . The four remaining national league teams were able to look forward to attractive tickets, because SC Weiz received the reigning champions SK Sturm Graz and the ASC Götzendorf the reigning cup winner SV Ried in a real local derby. While the Grazer came to a sovereign 4-0 victory, the SV Ried had to tremble for a long time, because only in the final minute could the wafer-thin 3-2 success be fixed. ASK Bad Vöslau, looked after by the ex-international Willi Kreuz , was able to look forward to a sold out house against SK Rapid Wien. Hamdi Salihi, who already scored five goals in the first round, had this time with three goals for a secure 4-1 victory for the record champions. The Union St. Florian hosted FC Blau-Weiß Linz in the local derby, who ultimately prevailed 2-0. For SV St. Margarethen, the heroic fight in the first round was worth it, because it gave them the Bundesliga club FC Wacker Innsbruck in the home game, which achieved a sure 3-0 win.
The top sensation of the second round was created by the state division SVG Reichenau, who threw the Bundesliga club Kapfenberger SV out of the competition with a 2-1 win. This makes the Tyroleans the only club from the fourth level that was able to move into the third round. With SV Mattersburg, a second Bundesliga club fell by the wayside. The Burgenland, where Thorsten Röcher and Alexander Pöllhuber had to leave the field prematurely after yellow and red cards , were defeated by the second team of FC Red Bull Salzburg after a 1-1 draw in the decisive penalty shoot-out with 4: 5 goals. The second team of SK Rapid Wien provided another surprise. The regional team, who threw the Bundesliga club SC Wiener Neustadt out of the competition in the first round, beat the current leaders of the first division, SG Wolfsberger AC / SK St. Andrä deserved 4: 2. The biggest win of the second round was achieved by SC Austria Lustenau, who scored a 7-0 victory at regional league club FC Union Innsbruck. Gerald Krajic distinguished himself as a three-time goalscorer.

Round of 16
The games of the round of 16 took place on October 25th and 26th, 2011. The public draw for the round of 16 took place on September 25, 2011 in the ORF broadcast Sport am Sonntag . The two two-man kayak world champions Yvonne Schuring and Viktoria Schwarz acted as “lucky fairies” .
The record cup winner FK Austria Wien was drawn to the only remaining regional league club, SVG Reichenau, which meant that the Innsbruck team could look forward to great interest from the audience. With 1,000 visitors, the small stadium was full to the brim. They saw FK Austria Wien, who struggled on the bumpy pitch, but ultimately left the pitch as a 2-0 winner. There was also a great backdrop at the Lustenau Derby, where SC Austria Lustenau received FC Lustenau 07. The last cup finalist Austria gave FC no chance and won with 4-1 goals. Of the two remaining regional leagues, only FC Red Bull Salzburg II was able to prevail with a 2-1 win against LASK Linz, while SK Rapid Wien II had to admit defeat by TSV Hartberg 2-0. The first division club SV Grödig caused a tangible surprise, winning 1-0 against Bundesliga club FC Wacker Innsbruck. The clear 3-1 victory of the regional division FC Red Bull Salzburg over the first division club FC Blau-Weiß Linz was not expected. In the two Bundesliga duels, SK Rapid Wien had to admit defeat 1: 2 to the reigning cup winner SV Ried in the finish of extra time, despite their home advantage. The 2010 cup winner, SK Sturm Graz, scored a sure 3-1 victory against FC Admira Wacker Mödling.

Quarter finals
The quarter-finals took place on April 10th and 11th, 2012. The draw was carried out on November 6, 2011 as part of the TV program Sport am Sonntag , with Victoria Max-Theurer, who took part in the dressage Olympics twice, drawing the pairings. This brought with the Styrian derby between Bundesliga club SK Sturm Graz and first division club TSV Hartberg a real big game that ended with a definite surprise. The 2010 cup winner couldn't get past a 2-2 draw in regular time. In the extension that followed, the bottom of the table in the First League finally won 4-2 and threw the high favorite out of the competition. The duel between the last cup finalists SC Austria Lustenau and the record cup winners FK Austria Wien promised to be no less exciting. Although Vorarlberg made the game, the Viennese were able to prevail 2: 1 and thus take revenge for the 0: 4 home defeat last year. The reigning cup winner SV Ried had to compete at SV Grödig, with whom the Ried are on friendly terms. The first division team seemed to be able to leave the field as the winner for a long time, before the Rieser could not prevail in the finish thanks to a one-two with 3: 2.
However, the club-internal duel of FC Red Bull Salzburg, in which the first team has to face the second team, raised some criticism. After an internal duel at SK Rapid Wien last season , Salzburg will be hit this time. While the second teams are excluded from participation in the DFB Cup , the Austrian clubs at the ÖFB ensure that their second sets can also take part in the competition. According to the ÖFB General Director Alfred Ludwig , this will end in the coming season due to the criticism that has arisen. As part of a workshop, solutions should be found how such internal duels can be prevented. Although the second team surprisingly took the lead, the clear 4-1 victory of the first team was never in question.
