The St. Margarethen sports club , or SV St. Margarethen for short, is an Austrian amateur football club from St. Margarethen in Burgenland . The club currently plays in the Burgenland League, the highest amateur league in the state of Burgenland , which is the fourth highest level in Austria .

history

Football was played in St. Margarethen as early as the 1920s. The first "real" association was not founded until 1949. SV St. Margarethen started in 2nd class North, lost all 10 games and was relegated to 3rd class. The temporary end came as early as 1954 due to financial turbulence. On August 14, 1958, the club was re-established as FC St. Margarethen. After four years in second class, the club made the leap to first class in 1961, where it won the championship title in 1968/69.

Only two years later, in the 1970/71 season, the championship title was won again in the II. Northern League and Sankt Margarethen played in the regional league of Burgenland. The club recruits the majority of its players then as now from its own offspring. The club, which has been called SV since 1973, stayed in the regional league for ten years, finishing third (1977/78) and fourth (1978/79). In the 1980/81 season the bitter path back to the 2nd division north follows. But already in 1983/84 St. Margarethen became champion of the II. League North and rose again. The most successful years follow. With a sensational third place in the table, SV St. Margarethen qualified for the regional league (3rd level).

There the club landed in ninth place (1985/86), but won the regional league cup with a 3-2 win against Floridsdorfer AC . This is followed by the national championship title in the hall (1986), the vice-hall title (1987) and fifth place in the regional league (1986/87). Just one year later, St. Margarethen has to return to the regional league. There the club mutates into a long-running hit. The best placings are two fourth places (1997/98 and 2004/05). However, the club often gets into dire straits. St. Margarethen struggled to stay up in the 1996/97, 2002/03 and 2006/07 seasons. Since 2002 the association has also been named SV WAHA fix & finished Sankt Margarethen .

After 20 seasons, SV St. Margarethen was relegated. But the return is not long in coming, in 2010/11 the promotion and victory in the Burgenland soccer cup (1-0 against Welgersdorf) succeed. With well-known names such as Josef Degeorgi as coach, ex national player Marcus Pürk and the football globetrotter Rolf Martin Landerl , the club is re-establishing itself in the Burgenland League. A record for the club will probably last forever - St. Margarethen remains unbeaten for a year or 33 competitive games. SV finished eighth in the Burgenland League, and the 2011/12 season saw a sensation in the ÖFB Cup : in Wattens, St. Margarethen won against the later Regionalliga West champions on penalties and played against Bundesliga club Wacker Innsbruck in September 2011 . In front of 1,500 spectators in the local “Greabochstadion” there is an honorable 3-0 defeat. In the winter of 2012 there will be a change of coach, Rolf Martin Landerl follows Josef Degeorgi. Landerl takes 10th place with 45 points. In summer 2013 there will be another change of coach. Landerl changes to FC Admira Wacker Mödling  II, Marcus Pürk takes over as player-coach.

In 2013/14, in its 35th season in the Burgenland League, SV St. Margarethen took the rather disappointing 11th place and also had the highest home defeat in its history. On June 7th, 2014 the team lost against ASV Draßburg with 0: 8. In the summer of 2014 there is a change in the coaching bench, Roman Mählich takes over from Marcus Pürk. With the new coach and some new signings, the SV shows good football in autumn 2014, only has to leave the field twice as a loser and winter in fifth place, only four points behind autumn champion SV Oberwart . In the spring of 2015, events came thick and fast: after a bad start, Coach Mählich accepted an offer from FK Austria Wien and became the coach of the second team in the Regionalliga Ost . Gerhard Gmasz is the new supervisor and secures the league with 10th place and a total of 39 points.

With the 2015/16 season, a lot will change at the “Greaboch”. With Eldar Topić and Helmut Prenner , the Burgenland league team has brought in two ex-Bundesliga professionals who have already shown themselves in the narrow 3-2 defeat against FK Austria Wien. In this game, the club also sets its new attendance record: 2,200 spectators come to the “Greabochstadion”. With a completely reformed squad, the SV managed a great first half of the season, which the squad concluded with the runner-up in autumn. The highlight is a winning streak of six full successes in a row (including 2-1 at SV Mattersburg II, 5-0 against SV Neuberg ), which meanwhile lifts the club to first place. Due to some point losses against stragglers and a devastating 0: 7 bankruptcy in Eltendorf, St. Margarethen loses the fight for the autumn championship. In spring, SV Sankt Margarethen played for the title for a long time, but lost against stragglers ASKÖ Klingenbach 1: 2 and in Horitschon 0: 4. Nevertheless, the title remains within reach. Only two rounds before the end, after the 0: 1 bankruptcy in Pinkafeld, the title is gone. Sankt Margarethen ranks 6th with 56 points. As a side irony: this season, for the first time in the history of the Burgenland League, there is no club that wants to move up to the Regionalliga Ost. After the good season there is a sensational end to the season. The SK Rapid Wien guest appearance on "Greaboch" in front of 2,000 spectators and St. Margaret celebrating a sensational 1: 0 win. The goalscorer is the ex-Rapidler Helmut Prenner.

In the 2016/17 season, the club is slimming down in terms of personnel and is again relying on many players from its own offspring. The company succeeds. Reinforced with two legionnaires from Slovakia, Martin Babic and Tomas Horvath, the team of neo-coach Marek Kausich placed in midfield (8th place) of the table of the Burgenland League with 46 points from 32 games. In the BFV Cup, the early break comes in the 1st round against ASK Pama. Sankt Margarethen enters the 2017/18 season almost unchanged. In the penalty shootout, the SV loses in the first round of the BFV Cup against Klingenbach. The championship starts tough, after four rounds there are just as many points. The club remained undefeated for the next nine rounds and scored 19 points. In the autumn championship, Sankt Margarethen was eighth with 26 points. In winter, Tomas Horvath and Martin Hromovic were given up, but the championship was still going well. In the end, Sankt Margarethen celebrated the highest win of the season with a 5-0 win in Neuberg and a successful season with 47 points.
