Ozomatli are a seven-piece Latin band formed in 1995 that play a mix of Chicano rock, salsa (and other Latin American styles such as merengue , cumbia , comparsa ), funk , reggae , rap and fusion .

history

They see themselves as a band of the cultural mixed-pot downtown Los Angeles, where the band members come from. Her first album Ozomatli (Almo Sounds) reached No. 7 on the Billboard Latin Charts in 1998. In the same year she invited Carlos Santana to act as a support act. The second album Embrace the Chaos from 2001 won a Grammy Award for Best Latin Rock, Urban or Alternative Album, as did the album Street Signs from 2004 ( Concord Records ). In 2005 a live album was released from the performance at the Fillmore in San Francisco and in 2007 Don´t mess with the Dragon (Concord Records).

In 2006 they went on a world tour at the invitation of the US State Department. In 2008 they wrote a song Can't Stop the Blue for the Los Angeles Dodgers . In 2010 they appeared on the Boston Pops with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, followed by concerts with other symphony orchestras. They are politically active (the band was formed to play on a strike) and played more often at Democratic party events.

The beginning members included the bassist and rapper Will-Dog Abers, the percussionists Justin Porée and Jiro Yamaguchi, the trumpeter Asdru Sierra, the guitarist Raul Pacheco and the saxophonist / clarinetist Ulisses Bela In addition, the rapper Chali 2na, Cut Chemist, played on the turntables , drummer William Marufo and saxophonist Jose Espinosa on the first album. On the second album from 2001 Andy Mendoza also played drums in the regular line-up.

The cast in 2013 is Will-Dog Abers, Raul Pacheco, Justin Porée, Asdru Sierra, Jiro Yamaguchi, Ulisses Bela.
