Quarter finals

The future champions Sturm Graz prevailed in the quarter-finals with a goal from Gilbert Prilasnig in the 115th minute just 1-0. Ried defeated Bregenz in an exciting match with a goal from Berensztajn (27th) and a brace from Gerald Strafner (52nd and 65th minutes) 3-2. The Bregenz goals were scored by Schnepf (2nd) and Schmid in the 68th minute. Rapid fell behind against Admira / Wacker in the 19th minute of the game due to a goal from Arminas Narbekovas and was only able to reduce Admira to 1: 2 after Sliwowski (60th) led by Markus Pürk . LASK Linz surprisingly beat Tyrol 1-0 with a goal from Peter Stöger (89th).

Semifinals

Sturm Graz defeated Linz in a high-class game with goals from Reinmayr in the 63rd minute and Vastić (86th) 2-0. Ried made it to the ÖFB Cup final for the first time in extra time with a goal from Gerald Strafner in the 111th minute of the game with a narrow 1-0 win over Admira.

final

The final took place on May 19, 1998 in the Gerhard Hanappi Stadium in Vienna . The referee of the match was Günter Benkö . The Ried sports association went into the final as a clear underdog against the newly crowned champions, but was able to take a 1-0 lead in an exciting match thanks to a casually converted penalty from Goran Stanisavljevic in the 11th minute. Herwig Drechsel made it 2-0 in the 32nd minute, Reinmayr scored the connecting goal for Sturm Graz in the 88th minute. A minute later, Markus Scharrer fixed the final score and the first cup win with the third goal of the Upper Austrians as well as the first big title win for the club from Ried im Innkreis, which was not yet established in professional football .

In the 1997/98 Supercup game, which was traditionally played at the start of the season of the following year, the champions SK Sturm Graz returned the favor with a clear 4-0 win against SV Ried for the disgrace in the cup final.
