Posch started his career at TuS Mureck . In 1989 he moved to SV Flavia Solva . For the 1991/92 season he moved to the first-class FC Swarovski Tirol . He made his debut for the Tyroleans in July 1991 in the 1st division when he came on as a substitute for Robert Wazinger on the first day of that season against DSV Alpine in the 79th minute .

After only one season in the top division, Posch moved to Germany for Bundesliga club Bayer 05 Uerdingen in 1992 . After 20 games for Uerdingen in the Bundesliga , he had to relegate the club to the 2nd Bundesliga . However, due to a cruciate ligament injury, there were no more second division games for the club from North Rhine-Westphalia , which was promoted again in Posch's absence.

After two years abroad Posch returned to his home country for the 1994/95 season, where he joined the first division team SK Sturm Graz . For the Styrians he played over 130 games in Austria's highest league by 1999 and was also able to become champion twice. After the end of his career, he made a short guest appearance at the lower class FC Union Gamlitz in 2005 .

After retiring from his career, Posch initially worked as a youth coach at SK Sturm Graz . In January 2006 his first position as head coach in professional football followed; he took over the second division club SC Schwanenstadt . After only six months with the Upper Austrians, however, he was replaced by Andreas Heraf .

During the winter break of the 2007/08 season he became assistant coach at ASK Schwadorf . After the club was renamed and relocated at the end of the season, he also remained an assistant coach at FC Admira Wacker Mödling . In August 2008 he was released after only five games together with Heinz Peischl .

In 2009 Posch acted as coach of the fifth class 1. Wiener Neustädter SC . In July 2014 Posch became the sporting director of the lower-class Styrian club USV Mettersdorf . In May 2015 he returned to the Bundesliga club Wiener Neustadt, where he was assistant coach to Helgi Kolviðsson . However, the SCWN rose to the second division in the same month .

Posch remained loyal to the club even after relegation as Günter Kreissl's assistant coach . In January 2016, however, he moved to the Bundesliga club SV Ried , where he was first assistant coach to Paul Gludovatz , then to Christian Benbennek . In March 2017 he had to leave the club together with the German.
