Helgi Kolviðsson (born September 13, 1971 in Reykjavík ) is a former Icelandic football player and current football coach .

Career

Helgi Kolviðsson began his career as a teenager at HK Kópavogur before moving to local rivals IK Kópavogur . From there he went to Germany to the regional division SC Pfullendorf . In 1996 he moved to Austria for SC Austria Lustenau . The second division championship and thus promotion to the Austrian Bundesliga succeeded in the first season . In the following season, relegation was just managed.

In 1998, Helgi went back to Germany and signed on with the then second division club 1. FSV Mainz 05 . There the defensive all-rounder became a regular player. After two years he went to the first division relegated SSV Ulm 1846 . With this he missed relegation and returned to Austria. When FC Kärnten Helgi Kolviðsson ran for three years in the Bundesliga. In 2004 he returned to his old place of work in Pfullendorf, where he played until 2008.

Helgi Kolviðsson played 29 international matches for the Icelandic national football team .

After Michael Feichtenbeiner's dismissal in April 2008, he took over SC Pfullendorf on an interim basis. From 2008 to 2010 he worked as an assistant trainer under the head coach Walter Schneck . For the 2010/11 season he was coach of the club, which he left again at the end of the season to take over the coaching position of the Austrian first division club Austria Lustenau at the beginning of the 2011/12 season. In January 2013 he was voted Vorarlberg's coach of the year 2012 . On October 7, 2014, he was replaced at Austria by Mladen Posavec.

On November 24, 2014, Helgi succeeded Heimo Pfeifenberger and signed a contract with the relegation-threatened Austrian Bundesliga club SC Wiener Neustadt until the end of the 2014/15 season, which would have been extended in the event of relegation.

After the relegation of SC Wiener Neustadt, Helgi Kolviðsson moved to the Innviertel for SV Ried for the 2015/16 season , where he signed a two-year contract in June 2015. After five game days without a win, he was released from his contract on August 16, 2015.

From 2016 to 2018 Helgi was assistant coach of the Icelandic national team under Heimir Hallgrímsson .

He has been Liechtenstein's national coach since January 1, 2019 .
